VW camper van. Fitting Subaru engine
Guys,
Has anyone fitting one or know someone who has done so?
My cousin has terminal cancer sadly and wants to make the most of time he has left and is going ahead with a new project.
He was going to fit a Jaguar V12 lamp to the VW Camper van but is now wanting to go the Subaru Turbo lump route.
What MY engine would you suggest? I was thinking of a Newage WRX engine with ECUTEK ECU to run it with. But would a STI6 lump be best suited?
Any input would be great.
Cheers
Steve

I suspect there are more camper vans with Pork engines in them than Subaru engines. It is a reasonably well trodden route.
BTW Sti 6 is the same engine as Sti V. New age is Sti 7. The V/VI engines are simpler.

talk to richard henry autos in bradford.
I know for a fact he has done them and of course is the subaru specialist anyway.
I have been there and done that as they say with aircooled vw's and later on with water cooled.
the porsche route is a complete pile of nonsense. the engines are far too heavy and are very rarely used........ if yr talking about putting them in splits and bay campers.
if people do have porsche engines- what they usually have is 4 cylinder late 60's early 70's 911 engines: jamie olivers bus for example. although I think that was just a massive aircooled lump- I forget.
the subaru route is a very nice way to go- especially these days.
the other option- if yr talking bays: porsche 914/6 dog leg gearbox
and a proper built vw engine. mega mega bucks though.
john maher is the man re: vw performance engines, in fact he did the machining work for me many many years ago.
if you recognise his name, its because he is/was/still is the drummer from the buzzcocks.

i was nearly right with my dates. but you can get more than 90 bhp out of the vw block in any case.
anyhow- you rarely see a 6 cylinder in.
apart from the odd german building some proper autobarn stomper !!!!!!
seen one with a mid mounted M3 motor in resting on hydraulics. that was a fair old bit of engineering.

What do you/would you do with the intercooler? Given concern over pipe lengths and such?
(Genuinely curious!)
...just thinking, guess you could use a charge cooler...

think you've got to factor in the miserely ways of the average vw camper owner.
(this includes me btw!)
they spend **** all on their vehicles.
fitting porsche gear is just wayyyyy too expensive.
chances of seeing a 6 cylinder air or water cooled porsche engines in vw campers is nigh on impossible. you see a few yank or german conversions in glossy mags- thats about it.
so think about cost of parts for the conversion:
compared to a complete scooby working for what ? a grand ?
maybe another £1000 in adapter plates and fixings.
just kampers has a great vw forum and is a good starting point.

Cheers for the info guys.
My cousin has just got hold of a STi5 engine but minus the turbo.
Not sure what turbo to suggest to him to get? VF23,24,29 or TD series. Need to take into account power to weight.
Would you suggest a charge cooler for the STi lump?
Steve
