Believe it or not a red one drove past me yesterday in red with a For Sale sign in the window. H plate, advertised as family owned from new. The reason it caught my eye was "Haven't seen one of those for a while" together with "Tidy". If I see it again I'll get a number. Bob

Gotcha.
How long were the Mk1s around for?
I had a mate with one that turned out to be stolen and they took it off him. He was the one that always had the best cars - Escort 1.6 Ghia, Mk1 Astra GTE, Mk2 GTE, xr4x4.... It was the late 80s/early 90s and any young guy with these was seriously cool.

I only went in one once. We were up in Hartlepool for a weekend on the pi$$, back in the early 1990's. It had snowed quite a lot up there and this guy took us to the Tall Trees nightclub in Yarm (Wimbledon FC were up there for a called-off game against Middlesboro) in his XR4x4i. He entertained us all with his 4 wheel drive doughnuts in the snow-covered car-park! Kids eh?

I reckon maybe from b to d reg, so not much to go on.
The search continues, i'll even take one that needs some tlc, engine overhaul, rough around the edges or concourse. I plan on buying a couple fo fords from that time.
RS Turbo S1 & S2. Xr4x4 Mk1 & whatever else takes my fancy, it'll probably take me a while to get the right cars though but i suppose something has to give

I had two later cars in the early 90's.
Both were 2.9's which was a far better engine with a much wider spread of torque.
The 2nd one I had was actualy a GLS 2.9V6 4X4. It looked like a GLS from the outside and with the grey bumbers and wheel trims but had the XR's running gear. They were the car of choice for caravanners at the time.
The one I had was a 1990 G Plate with the smoked rear lights and was fitted with the 235bhp Turbo technics conversion.
I seriously used to embarrass some nice motors at the lights, the look on their faces was priceless as they assumed they were next to 2.0 GLS.
Not in the same league but I currently run a 2007 Mondeo GhiaX which could easily be a 2.0, instead it has the 3.0V6 engine and 6 speed box from the ST220 under the bonnet. Catches one or two out that's for sure.
Cheers

That brings back memories, my brother used to have a black mk1 4x4, I think he got it when it was about 2 and a hald yrs old, it had the turbo technics conversion running a T2 married onto a T4 ( I think) running about 310bhp, it also had a 4i rear spoiler, cossy skirts, bonnet and grill, 5 spoke RS alloys and the 3 spoke RS steering wheel, he always had a gearbox sitting waiting to go into it...lol . After about 9 years and thousands of pounds spent on it he eventualy sold it for £600 back in 97 / 98
Have looked at these a few times over the years.

I know there was a cross over....some none facelifted models with 2.9s but never seen a facelift with 2.8.
Never heard them called Mks before either. They were all sierras and the 88Es saw a facelift adjusting front and rear lights plus a few other bits but not enough to call it a Mk change.

I know there was a cross over....some none facelifted models with 2.9s but never seen a facelift with 2.8.

Yeah, his was deffo a 2.8. Must have been just at the facelift then. I remember after he got it, the 2.9 came out. But can't remember what time frame that was after he go his.
