Audi Diesels 2.5 V6 versus 1.9 PD130
Morning All,
Going to look at an A6 Avant 2.5 V6 today, bit worried its not going to be much more fuel efficient than a petrol and thus defeating the object of having a noisy old oil burner.
I know the PD130 is a proven reliable and fuel efficient (if not very refined) diesel.
A6 Avant is a big unit to lug around though.
Any thoughts?
Cheers

Assume you mean a diesel V6?!
I don't rate that particular unit. Not very quick for the size of engine, noisy and a bit agricultural.
The 1.9 is pretty tuneable - I'd get one of these and chip it.

I loved my wife's 2003 Audi A6 2.5 V6 TDI SE with CVT box. Super smooth, quiet, refined [unlike the PD engine] as brisk as a 130PD golf and circa 38MPG. I was sorry to see that car go

My fear with all of these Audi's is dull to drive.
Also looking at an Alfa fully loaded 156 as mate has taken one in part exchange and can get very cheap, probably need to save the money for the servicing when it goes wrong as its got 112k miles on it

My mates dad was a director as Bayliss (largeish haulage firm) and chose the fleet cars. They went from Volvos to A4 2.5 TDis - almost all had gearbox issues and they got shot of them that same year.

Being honest avoid the v6 diesels. Whilst on the whole they are reliable, when they do go wrong they are a right pain in the ****.
If you do get one, whatever you do make sure the cambelt is good and there aren't any noises comming from the belt tensioners (hard to tell - being a noisy diesel ). Otherwise if left in ignorance your potentially looking at big bills if that belt comes off -for both parts and labour.
Whilst I've dealt with these have done 200k miles, the cost of repairing the cylinder heads and cams was more that the car's worth.
I'm not going to pretend I like working on big engined A4 and A6 Audis; As there is only so many times one can remove/replace the whole front assembly (including cooling system, power steering, a/c reclaim, oil lines etc) to get decent engine access without loosing one's sanity.
So if I did ever have one myself, I would personally insist on getting one will all teh bill and reciepts of work done - dealer stamps in a book isn't enough for me (unless its nearly new with low miles, cast iron warranty etc).

I'm looking for a high mile low rent lugger for weekend mountain bike antics, but could defo do without the head ache of cam belts coming off or major bills.
I'm not tight with getting cars maintained though.
There is an A3 Sport PD110 around the corner going at a reasonable price (£3k), just over 100k on the clock. Would prefer a bigger estate but can put bike on roof.

Aye, have thought about that, and Golf GT.
Mate has just taken in a 156 sportswaggon Veloce 1.9 JTD with 111k on the clock, he is getting his engineers to check it over, has FSH. Offered it me at cost, which is a lot less than any Germanic counter parts by nearly over 50% of my budget. I'm just not sure I can live with the 'Italian' build quality and quirks though.

1.9 mated to the six speed box.
Tyre smokingly tuneable.
Try allard motor company.
The 2.5 V6 is not as reliable or tuneable.
There are 1.9 road cars pushing 220BHP at the wheels.

I drove the 2.5 A4 tdi and was less than impressed, I expected it to be way better than the 1.9 130, it just wasnt, a bit smoother but didnt seem as fast as a Golf 130, bigger car plus Auto but I thought it was boring, 2.7 is a bit better but not much better on fuel than a petrol.
