Freelander TD4

Freelander TD4
I've been offered a TD4 3 door hardback sport model with very low mileage for a great price against my Audi TT (i know my remapped 225 is quicker) and have been looking at some reviews but they're up and down.
The TD4 is the 1 to go for but some have niggly faults but so do all cars so this isn't the be all end all
has anyone owned 1 of these for a while (facelift 03> model) and can give an honest opinion?
It's got a private plate on which is comming off (i guess) so with it being reg sept 2006 am i correct in saying it'll be a 56 plate?
Cheers

i do know the early ones are prone to knackered centre diffs, often due to tyre mis-matches
not sure if thats been sorted -- you can test by driving in a tight circle and listen for tyre scrubbing/skipping

problem i have is the car is 180 miles away (it's a dealer selling it) so i can't pop down for a test drive so i'm relying on his description - he says it's immaculate which with less than 20k it should be, it has fsh and remainder of warranty (is it 3 years for LR warranty?)
the head gasket probs were on the 1.8 petrol models, this is a TD4 BMW diesel engine so no need to worry there
anything else?

The alternator used to fail on higher mileage ones, along with air mass meters, the low pressure fuel pumps used to fail causing a none start on early TD4's but later ones had a much better set-up and caused no problems.
I've seen 187+k TD4's that are still going strong, great engine in my opinion.

i was told by someone at work with a 55 plate LR updated the engine late 2005 so with this being a late 2006 model (1 of the last mk1s) it will have the newer engine

i bought 1 last may and it had been well looked after. 1 owner fully serviced and had only covered 40k. this was also 1 of the last mk1's.
i will never own 1 again or reccomend 1.
in the 7 months i owned it
the front window mechanisms had to be replaced,
the door locks had to be replaced,
the slave cylinder on the clutch failed and burned the clutch out and cracked the flywheel,
fuel pump failed,
boot was like rutland resovoir,
a bolt sheered off on the steering rack and steering failed on a roundabout,
center prop bearings and vcu seized up causing damage to the rear diff.
electric mirrors folded in and wouldnt fold back out.
Make sure u get a good waranty m8 thats all i can say.

Sounds as though you got a friday car there bubbaroo?
The car isn't 3 years old until september so will be under the dealers warranty till then so any problems will be sorted at their expense

on its upside tho the Td4 Engine was superb such a shame because when going good they are very comfortable to drive.
your best bet for information on it would be here. FREELANDERCLUB

If its the old shape; don't try crashing it: I was involved in a low-speed head-on on a country lane with one of these. Our car, my mates Renault Laguana company car (took it quite well), could open all the doors and it stayed on all four wheels...Freelander, not so good. We couldn't open the driver's door to get the driver out, which made it a problem as it had rolled onto its side after the collision, so the passenger side couldn't be accesed either. Just as well it had a pop-out sunroof.
Yeah I know NCap ratings and crap like that probably don't matter to most people. But when they have the image of being a "tough" 4x4 they don't seem to be that good when it comes to the crunch, whereas it appears RAV4s, CRV and X-trails and the Freelander 2 fare better in crash ratings.
If its a freelander 2, ignore all the above as they are much improved safety-wise.
