SL55 AMG or 911.... er, i chose the merc! i got it wrong!!!
a few months back i bought an sl55 over a 996 turbo. and, to be honest, i got it wrong!
turns out the sl55 is not what i thought it would be. what it is, is a great engine in a poorly built heavy car!
this car spent more time in the dealers getting a multitude of problems fixed, from faulty central locking, to abc and intercooler pumps failing, you name it, it went wrong. so i got the car sorted on warranty (thank god, because a new abc pump alone is £1700 fitted at merc!) and traded it in.
when it was working, it felt very heavy, had dodgy handling, drank fuel, sounded gorgeous, was quite huge in size, and near lethal in the wet driving fast.
got myself a 996 turbo, tiptronic( i love autos), with all the nice toys.
wish id saved a load of time and money wasted over the years and got myself one of these cars years ago!! wow! ive had plenty of tuned jap metal and some lovely tuned german stuff, but none of them seem as rapid as this thing! its standard, yet the acceleration is unbelievable, its beautifully composed at all times, has fantastic brakes, good solid(if a little uninspired) interior, and nothings broke so far! i adore it!
so im eating humble pie, and hindsight is a wonderful thing. i was initially taken with the sl, but soon enough its shortcomings were exposed, whereas the 911 seems to make me fall for it more, everytime im anywhere near it.
thanks for reading
p.s, heres the original thread if you wanna read.

Bit of a shock this Spudders, but glad to read of a happy ending
All else aside, an unreliable car is an absolute nightmare. It ruins even the finest driving experience. It killed TVR. If I could run to a decent 911 Turbo, I'm pretty sure there'd be no looking back.
Those Mercs have plenty to go wrong, and that's really what put me off. They do have a bad rep these days. Porsche, and the Japanese in general, see reliability as a key performance feature.

cheers mate. i thought it was important that i do, coz i dunno about other people, but when it comes to car changing time, i often do a search here for other peoples experiences of a car i may be interested in. i wouldnt want to be partly responsible for anyone buying a lemon car. sl55 is like a beautiful model with herpes gagging for it, looks great, will probably go great, but you know your gonna suffer with it eventually!

Lol great analogy - very accurate too. Mercedes dropped the ball with quality control about 20 years ago unfortunately. My mum runs an old 1989 500SL which has never missed a beat, shame that the modern cars aren't as reliable.

20 years ago Mercs were built by the engineers who then told the bean counters what to sell them at
now the bean counters tell the engineers how much its going to cost
apperently it all went wrong with the change of ashtray design!!!

Welcome to the fold, if its your first 911 its a great car to start with!! Just does not leave many options in terms of where you go next other than the GT2, GT3/RS etal which are not really every day cars. Anyway, enjoy - see you on PH Porsche forum?
