Default How long should an A3 1.8T last?

My wife's A3 is a 2001 car with 89k on the clock.

We've had it for 5 years and it was a co. car before that. It has a full service history and I keep on top of the basics. It only does 5k per year now and most of that is town driving since I got my co. car. It's just had new Toyos, discs and pads on the back and the front brakes are fairly recent.

So, how much longer will it last and what is likely to go?

The reason I ask is that the drivers side airbag has started to play up and a repair, at Audi rates will cost over a grand. There is a way of disabling this unit so the others work but is this the start of the slippery slope to the car being a liability?

water pumps go, the plastic impeller snaps off, heads crack on water jackets, if abused not very long, if gentle they will go for a while,

Theres a lad local who has a Golf with the same engine with what I assume is some dirty great turbo on - lots of whistle, lots of chatter, lots of noise, lots of wheelspin for his trouble too.

I assume its been strengthened the way he drives it.

Maybe a better phrased question would read, "What could go wrong that would cost more than 3 months depreciation on a newish £15k car?"

You've sort of answered your own question. If you still like the car, it will be cheaper to fork out £500 here (and £1000 there) then pay thousands a year in depreciation.

I'd strongly recommend changing the oil strainer most the 1.8t's suffer from low oil pressure around 80k ish. The K03 turbo fitted to your motor is one of the best for reliablity a lot better than the Garrett ones, keep the oil changes to 6-7k and use decent quality oil and I'd say 150k with no problems Dean.
