At about that time (2000) I was driving a Passat with work - spending 8 hours + a day in the thing. Choices of car back then were Mondeo, Vectra or Omega - I prefered the Passat as it was the only turbo we had. Quite a nice car (at the time) and fairly quick (1.8T). Bit wafty at higher speeds but pulled well in 3rd, never had any problems other than the fact I parked it in a lamp post and that was the end of that. Not sure what the score is 8 years down the line though!

I've got a 2003 130 tdi sport estate and it probably is the best car i've owned for comfort, space, economy and overall practicality.
I was looking to sell it but really can not find anything else that would give me the same overall package - space, comfort, economy and price.

More info: WiseBuyer's Guides - Volkswagen Passat (2001-05) Car specs, standard equipment and optional extras
Got mine 3 years ago with 94K ish on the clock. Now got 140K. Had to replace the aux. belt tensioner and related bits (age related), a lower control arm and service items. Oil every 10K. Cambelt every 60K. Stop/start traffic just under 40mpg. Runs, top 40s mpg. Gets worse near a service then better after - not sure if it's clean oil or a new air filter that helps ....
Handling? A bit wallowish but then I never bought an estate for the handling. I *might* do something about to as my lad is starting to get car sick - as I was as a lad. So some Powerflex bushes, maybe add a Neuspeed rear AR bar them better shocks/springs. Maybe ....
Good quality interior though you could call it *bland* because it's several shades of black ..... As B2Z says, " ... it's comfortable, spacious and (reasonably) economical .... ".

As Dave says the economy isn't always great or as good as you hear people claim. Some will say they get 60mpg all day long whilst others like me average 40mpg or just above occasionally and that is driving it at low revs everywhere.
It seems from the threads i've read over on the Passat section on vwaudi forum that the 130 sports do seem to lack the economy of the 115bhp model but the performance difference is negligible. Perhaps the 115bhp model is the one to get.
However if you are after a 99 one I think they are 90bhp or 100bhp models.
Also cheers for those links above Dave as not seen those before so having a look now. This is the one i'd been using up until now:

Hello,
I am glad to hear that you are interested about my 2005 Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDi. The car is in perfect conditions without any scratches, damages or other mechanical problems. The interior is in like new condition and has never been smoked in. About the shipping taxes you don't have to worry because I will pay for it. The vehicle comes with V5 registration document, all original keys, owner's manual and full maintenance records. I live in Switzerland and I bought it from United Kingdom so it has UK emissions and is still registered there.
I can't find a buyer in my country so I want to sell it in UK. I took care of it like it was my own baby and now is in the same condition as it was when I bought it - even better!
I want to take this opportunity to assure you that this deal is 100% legitimate.
Thank you,
Louise

ill keep on emailing him... SCUMDOG
The price for the car is with shipping included because i work in army and i have a voucher to ship free with Lufthansa Airplane Cargo. will take 72 hours until you will have it in your nearest International Airport or in 5 working days you will have it at your door.
The deal will happen through eBay. They are acting like a third party in this deal. The payment will be managed by Ebay and they will keep the money until you receive the vehicle and test it and see that is like i described to you. In this way, we are both 100% covered during the steps of this transaction. Please take into consideration that i will get paid only after you receive the car.
In order for us to go to the next level, i will need you to provide me your full name and exact address, so i can notify ebay that you are selected as my buyer. After i get in touch with them, they will contact you to explain the entire procedure.
Thank you,
Louise
