Default Cuffed the jaffa cake - The rebuild begins

29th Nov - Castle Combe - Camp corner - oh dear :shame:

Friend had an initial look at it today. This was his comment

Started having a proper look today. Forgot the camera - putting it in the car now, ready for tomorrow!!

Stripped off the bumpers and the plastic bits. The vultures started turning up today, let alone circling on here!! Couple of silly offers for the wreckage...

Phoned up the jig man and secured a low-cost high favourage borrow of the gear for next week.

Arranged a borrow of a 7.5 tonner with tail lift + driver too.

Phoned local friendly race repair shop and told them of Gary stackage. They agreed to pitch up for a look see.

When they turned up, the mocking started with a vengeance. Comments like "that's not a stack, its a slap, and not much of one at that" etc

They asked who had pushed Gary, but when I explained he managed it all on his own, the laughter really started...

Des has very kindly volunteered to come over (they are only over the road anyway) when the gear and Gary have arrived to split his time between straightening out the car and straightening out the driver...

The rear 1/4 will be repaired, hopefully, as no one really fancies unpicking a secondhand panel, and a new one is £300. A few extras required - one engine mount ripped in two - there is a scar on the chassis leg where the engine has moved a good 4 inches to hit it, and then moved all the way back. Radiator stuffed, fan shed 3 blades. Rack banana'd. Oil cooler beaten, but probably OK.

Gary has the list.

Thinking of buying a dunce's hat.....

Oops I guess this is always a possibility in a track focused car. Shame after all the work you put into it. I'm sure it will be back to normal in no time though.

Not going to say yes. That was our planned completion date when we first made it. We were a year late in the end ;D

Really sorry to see that Gary after all the effort you put in to building it How did it happen?

I hope you can get it repaired as easily as it sounds because reshelling it won't be easy because of the effort you put into it. Do you still have the 205?

Combe on Saturday. Temp 1 degrees, foggy, pushing too hard too soon. Driver error.

The 205 is still in Germany and it needs to come home. Been saying that for a while now, just havent made it happen yet.

I know you've put a lot of time and effort into the car, so I hope you get it back on track again soon.

I had no time to work on the Jaffa Cake today, as some paying work came through the door... Makes a change...
Took some pictures, although you can't really see much unless you know what you are looking at.
First off, a shot of as she now sits with the broken plastics removed.

A view down each side. You may be able to see the front moved over to the nearside. If not, just nod and say "yes, yes, I see the problem, Hmm..."

A quick look in the boot. Can't get the battery out yet... You can see the chassis rail has a small pinch in it. Or not. (do the yes thing again)

Poke around under the hood. You can see the kink in the chassis leg.... You're getting it now!!

When I got home, my 3 year old had created a 'Gary's crash tribute' diorama with my best Caterham 7 model on the living room floor...

Ahh, bless...
Grr.

This might be a good time to get it seam welded. I think that youd have got away with quite a bit less structural damage had it been done initially.

The chassis leg and the rail at the back (depending on how far you took the welding away from the suspension points).

You think the front chassis leg wouldnt have moved had it been seam welded. Not sure I agree, but then hey I guess we will never know

Its impossible to know. Im confident that it wouldnt have been as badly damaged, but the energy would have still have to have been absorbed somewhere; so the panel damage would have been more severe...
