Ford contract

Has anyone been involved with a ford exchange deal. Im not too sure what its called so bare with me...
A friend has bought a new ford under a 4 year deal(i believe) he has changed his car to a smaller one so therefore reducing his monthly repayments.
He has since then decided that he still cannot pay these payments. He has been back to ford whom have said he cannot change cars, even though they originally said he they could. Is any of this on the contract?
Is this right?? surely he doesnt have to keep the car for the whole 4yrs. Are they pulling a fast one
