New M3 vs 335i chipped
these cars are getting cheaper, the 335i is really cheap, which is better in terms of performance and mpg, any owners out there?

I'm not sure that anyone has managed to crack the code of a 335I but if its been done i should imagine a remapped 335I in a straight line to be a serious bit of kit.

135i is faster than both, which is why BMW have just released a new map that will get put on all 135i's at their next service / dealer visit that limits the power and drops torque 1000rpm further up the rev range.
BMW say its for "noise" reasons but I suspect its to make the 135i slower than the M3 myself...

LOL, sod that. There is absolutely NO WAY I'd tolerate putting my car into the dealers for a service for it to be returned to me slower than when it went in. I'd refuse, and if they claim it's required or the warranty will be null and void then I'd say the car fundamentally flawed when originally sold to me and therefore not fit for the purpose for which it was intended and would reject it for a full refund.

Evolve About Us
went there on a dyno day and some high end motors turned up and there were 2 e90 335i's getting there ecu's remapped
IIRC they put a huge grin on the owners face as the torque and power increase was huge

Cool nice link - 335I with 380bhp and shed loads of torque. Definately new M3 territory if not beyond with all that torque. Probably makes for a much nicer real world drive.
I have seriously overlooked 135I's. 306bhp out of a tiny,tiny car must be huge fun

The only problem with the 135 is it's very nearly as heavy as the 3-series anyway so whilst you think 306bhp is going to be electric compared to the 3-series it's not much quicker at all!

The 335i chipped maybe as fast as an M3 in a straight line but there is alot more to a M car than power. The steering rack, suspension, brakes etc. iirc the 335 doesn't even have a limited slip diff.
Its probably a fantastic car but is not a drivers car in the way the M3 is

Thats for sure, however the 135i is a LOT cheaper, like 50% cheaper.
135i = 1560kg
M3 = 1665kg
So 105kg in it, and about 100bhp.
YouTube - BMW 135i vs M3 E92 DRAG RACE
There is not much in it, and I am sure on a second run the M3 could just get it, but not £30k in the prcie difference!
This is a great review

LOL at that race! Whilst I agree with the point you are making about it being 'almost' as fast for a lot less money that race was a total joke! I think what is interesting, and is kind of the point of the thread, is that a chipped BMW with the 3.0tt engine is going to be ball park as fast or faster than the new M3. As for the diff you can get one fitted can you not? I'm sure someone on here did it to his 335i touring.

BMW seem to "get away" with the massive weight of their cars.
It never seems to get mentioned in reviews - ever.
Yet my 1477kg Golf R32 got a right old battering for being too lardy.
1560kg is a huge weight for a 2WD little car -do they make it out of lead?!
Still looks fun though...

They do indeed - still cannot believe that the 3.0TT diesel kicks out over 280bhp and 400lbs/ft yet only puts out 180g/km of CO2 - no one gets anywhere near that for the performance!!

I always find it funny how the US has higher ambient temps than the UK and lower grade fuel yet still manages to get 100whp out of a vette by adding a filter or such like!

There are lots of cars that can equal or better M3 performance on paper. Like my modded Classic Scoob, which is lighter and faster.
But unfortunately, it is not an M3. And neither is a 335i, nor is a 135i. Not the same thing at all. M3 is an icon, a driving legend, for a reason - Deep has mentioned some of the reasons why.
Used M3s are going for Scoob money nowadays. It's either that or an old 911 for me, both going for crazy prices. Yum
Richard.

There's a super rich college kid who loves beemers on a forum over there, he's got e46 M3, E92 M3, E92 335i etc and lives to tune them. I think the 500BHP he was claiming was real.

Had my 335i remapped with fuel pump and exhaust upgrades, in essence a bit like a PPP. She is now pushing out a steady 462bhp. What a machine!!!!

The major problem as already stated is the M3 has a LSD, better steering, suspension, brakes etc etc. Obviously there is a price difference but given the choice i know what id rather have!
out of interest are 335is below 20k yet?
