Default Audi A3 Sportback

Anybody had one of these?

Quite interested in these, especially the diesel ones as the MPG looks amazing.

local dealer has a decent looking 55 plate metallic blue one with new rs6 wheels fitted, was checking the net and discovered these tuning boxes which would bump the power from approx 130bhp to 160bhp ?

seams like a total no brainer when they are supposed to do mega MPG when taking it easy (65mpg on one website?)

6 years of scoobies and i was considering spunking yet another shedload of cash into the car and playing with it, but i cant help feel its time to try something new

I just could not get myself to pay so much for an average product.

I decided for a Diesel Forester, chuffed as you get (well my wife is!)

I've looked around pretty much for the same reasons you mention i.e. MPG!

But in my opinion they are not worth the money the dealers want for them.

approx 7-10k for a 2-3 year old model derv from what i have seen so far, seams reasonable to be honest!

£10,950
and this one caught my eye as its the nice metallic blue colour

2005 55 AUDI A3 SPORTBACK 1.9 TDi **65.7 MPG** BIG ALLOYS 5 Door Hatchback
METALLIC BLUE, 40000 Miles, Full Service History, * THIS PRICE INCLUDES A FREE 7 DAY MONEY BACK GUARANTEE*, 45,000 Miles, Remote Central Locking, Electric Windows, Electric Mirrors, ABS, Traction Control, Power Steering, Drivers Airbag, Passenger Airbag, Alarm, Immobiliser, 18 Inch RS6 Style Alloy Wheels, Body Coloured Bumpers, Height Adj Drivers Seat and Steering Column, Radio/CD Player, Rear Head Rests,

£ £7,750
are they not worth this much?

anybody ever fitted one of these derv tuning boxes to one?

i assume they are the same engines as the golfs and such?

i had a car from this place a few years ago, was a diesel vectra, they used to specialise in ex police cars and such and were usually quite a bit cheaper then elsewhere at the time, not sure if the police even use A3`s ?

but assume they are just fleet cars with a quick tidy up (looks like they fit a new set of "big wheels" to each one nowadays)

expecting to see the odd smart repair done to the cars when i pop over for a look tomorrow, but i think they look quite classy to be honest!

no nothing like that mate, the a3 is spot on , i have one as a company car. those 2 you've just posted up cant be from main dealers, they seem very very cheap!

only thing to really be carefull of is when fitting the oversized rims the ride can turn to ****e. with regards to the box, yes they can be mapped. yes you'll proberly get 60-70mpg with economy driving, or if u drive normally a high 40 is easy. that blue one is a standard car, they didnt come with duel zone as standard. however leathers a plus.

some of those cars on that website seem very cheap, be weary they could be ex hertz cars etc. have you ever looked at buying an approved audi? you could get a 2.0tdi sport sportback for just a tad more than your budget. only thing i would suggest is that because the cars out of warrenty or nearing the end of its life, you want piece of mind with them.

I owned a 2.0TDI Sportback Sport for 18 months and 20,000 miles. It was, and will be, my last Audi.

Shocking quality. It needed two new steering racks and a rebuilt rear suspension during the time I had it. It developed various interior rattles, in fact, the Golf 150 TDI it replaced had more interior integrity. The dealers were arrogant, a total pain to deal with.

I replaced it with a Passat and was glad to see the back of it. It certainly wasn`t worth the extra money over a Golf.

Have a peek on Untitled Document and see for yourself.

Hello,

I've currently got a A3 Sportback 2.0 TDI as a company car. It's not exciting in any way, although overall it's a decent car and good at long distances. It averages about 52mpg in a mix of South London and M25 driving, including making the most of it's soot producing potential

It may be worth looking at the 2.0 TDIs also. I think the 1.9 TDI is only 105bhp and a 5-speed, whereas the 2.0 is 140bhp and 6-speed which may be a better mix of power and economy.

All that said, mine has broken down at least 4 times over the last 3 years and had various electronic niggles, so Volks is not alone with his reliability issues. By far the least reliable car I've ever had...

Dont get the 1.9 TDI its a dreadful engine, (we have an A3 sportback - poverty spec with this engine at work as a pool car), power delivery is nothing, then nothing, then boost for approx 3 sec then change gear and then nothing.
Its had to have a partial engine rebuild due to some idiot letting it run out of coolant & oil at 9K miles and then driving it hard for approx 300 miles.
Its an ok car with seats I just cant get comfy in - not sporting in any way - just an A to B car in my eyes!

the thing i noticed with regards to the engines is that when they are remapped (power boxed or whatever) the 1.9 and the 2.0 give pretty much the same figures, except the 1.9 was supposed to be a bit more frugal with the juice ?

its blatantly never going to compare with the 390lbft i have from my old and batterd scooby, but to be honest, i only ever drive the scooby to work now, (i only did 6kmiles last MOT) i stopped doing drag days about 5 years back lol, so its just wasted cash sitting out side not getting used.

6 years of filling the tank full of juice every week or so, and getting raped for insurance, and i think to myself, if i dont get rid of it soon, i end up doing another 6 years, and me and the missus are looking to buy a house in 4 years time lol

I have an 08 plate 1.9 TDi Sportback Sport and I'm very happy with it. I test drove both the 1.9 and 2.0 and found the 1.9 to be quicker off the mark (not top-end) and as it was about £100 a month cheaper on the lease price, it was a no-brainer for me. I do circa 60 miles a day and it doesn't get driven that hard. I would have liked a 6th gear, but I can live without it.

I put only a few extras on it (multi function steering wheel, interior light pack, rear mats) as I only planned to have it for a year but have just extended it an extra year.

When it comes up for renewal in March 2010, I will definitely look at them again, but would probably go for the 2.0 TDi engine.

Wife has an 05 A3 sportback 2.0 TDI 170bhp with 250approx lb/ft. It has all leather and all toys inc sat nav xenons bose. It is a very pleasant place to travel and although the steering takes a bit of getting used to it is ok to hustle along. Probably get about 40mpg with city driving and spirited runs out of town with the extra torque I find it goes really well.
Agree with the above, probably wouldn't bother with the 1.9 though.
