Default Rover 220 GSI

Just seen one of these seriously cheap (almost pocket change). Anyone know how quick they are standard, how they handle and how easy they are to tune?

It's the non-turbo model.

I had a 220GTI for 5 years before my Terzo. Great car, but let me down on two occasions (head gasket oil leak and cores plug corrosion), otherwise got me around the UK with the 44p per mile the company gave me.

0-60 7.9 secs and onto 127 mph.

Had a tomcat with the same engine, did 2 head gaskets in 2 years. I wish I had got the 1.6 Honda unit instead, its only 9 b.h.p. less and a lot more reliable.

Oh well, sounds like that even at £350 quid it's probably not worth the potential grief.

I had a 216 GSI and it not only ate its head gasket at 120k miles, but also its ECU and various other bits.

Nice enough to drive, but the Honda engine didn't save it fom an untimely death, cost me over £2k and I ended up scrapping it

It is a 1994 1.6SLi - can someone tell me if it has the Honda engine in it?

Blast from the past. I had one of these 216 GTI (16v) when I first left Uni. Cost me £3500 and was a great car. Pretty under powered but was lovely to drive. My first car with electric windows lol. Traded it in for an MR2 Turbo and its been a slippery slope since

had a 220gti brilliant car no oil leaks no problems whatsoever then got a 220coupe turbo no end of problems head gasket changed twice and it still leaked oil like a kuwait oil well. pretty fast though 0-60 in 6 secs had it superchipped as well to 220 bhp - torque steer was a problem in the wet if you floored it - it would almost stand still and slide to the right

I had a 220 tomcat turbo was a great car, never had a wrx go past me

You have to remember anyone who says "this broke" and "that broke" that the parts are dirt cheap and i meant dirt cheap, my head gasget went and a brand new klinger metal head gasget cost me £30 and the job was done within a couple of hours these cars are a piece of pizzle to work on
