I always have a glance at these in AT but the performance figures put me off.

Are they tunable...?

Proper Shogun =

Shogun Sport =

Old tech, old engines, decent off road but not much else to say about them.

How much do you have to spend?

What you want is a Jeep 3.7 V6 cherokee limited (not the grande cherokee... the one with the round lights)... can be had for peanuts... quick for a 4x4 (210bhp), fan bloody tastic offroad!! and not as terrible on juice as youd think..... ive been getting around 20mpg on short 10 miles run to work 5 days a week... will do 28mpg on a run on motorway.

Bought mine with 40'000 miles on, FSH, its got electric everything, leather heated seats and loads of room for my kids and dog.... snip at £2900

5 years ago it would have cost the best part of £23'000

Its reliable, sounds like thunder and id get rid of the missus car and buy another if she'd let me get rid of her car
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImtrzOwHjMY

lpg conversion is £1600-£2300.... but unless your doing over 15k a year not really worth doing.

Below car is overpriced... but this is identical to mine

2004 Jeep Cherokee 3.7 Limited Auto 5dr Black on eBay, also, Jeep, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 07-Oct-08 14:54:33 BST)

Absolute bargain!!

Didn't they make an Evolution version with an Evo 4G63 engine in?

Forget the Sport they are underpowered, slow, bouncy, not that good off road and are bordering on dangerous for serious towing. Many 1.6 diesel hatchbacks have more power and torque than the 2.5TD has.

The Jeep Cherokee is not a bad option as suggested above, not the best handler on road but proper off road ability and the limited versions have all the toys.
You could go for the 3.7V6 Petrol as suggested earlier but the later 2.8CRD's come with 163PS, 400NM as standard and a simple tuning box will give 195PS, 480NM.
Towing limit is 3500kg and the 2.2tonne kerbweight means you can tow heavy loads safely too.

YouTube - Jeep Liberty off road
YouTube - Jeep Liberty on the Moab Rim trail

I bought one a few months old a couple of years ago, it's not my only car but I've had it two years now which is the longest I've ever had a car since I was 17 (Now 39) so that must say something.

Cheers

That was in the SWB Shogun not the Sport which is based on an early L200 pickup.

I have a 110 TD5 as my work vehicle. Have also owned a few Series Landies.

You would have to be insane to have one as a daily drive.

4x4 Magazine rate the Wrangler higher than the Defender as it's just as good off road and far better on it. Not driven the new one myself though and it would be out of the thread starters budget.

Ah didnt know it was going to be a main car. A good offroad car that always performs really well at our club is the Frontera (believe it or not) its gone in a few times as a rescue car. Worst we have seen is a L200 with offroad tyres, it got stuck at the entrance and this is when 4 or 5 of our wifes have driven in already in Mondeos, Vectras etc

Dangerous for towing, you having a laugh! How have you come to that conclusion?

We had one for 3 years and did 60,000 miles with it, 75% of which was either spent towing a horse box with 2 large horses in or towing my subaru on a car trailer. Nearly always towing 2 ton +

Never had a problem with it, never got stuck with it and often helped others out of fields.

Try only being able to maintain 40mph on motorway hills. 114bhp and 177lbft isn't great when you have a near 4 tonne train weight.
Pulling out of junctions or onto roundabouts requires very carefull planning.

Only used it once for towing, never again.

You must of had a crap one then , because, i regularly sat at 70 with the Scoob on the trailer, up hill and down dale on the M1. Occasionally had to drop to 4th on the really steep hills, say Milnrow on the M62, but never went below 50mph.

One of the most stable towing vehicles i have driven.

Dont get me wrong its not a patch on some of more modern stuff in terms of power, but stability at speed when towing was superb.

Car on a car transporter is actually quite aerodynamic. The airflow from the tow car flows nicely over the trailered car.

Try the Sport 2.5TD with a large box trailer or caravan in a head wind and you would be struggling to get 60mph on the flat never mind up a hill.
Can't remember the exact year but even the Camping and Caravanning club said it would struggle to maintain speed limits on all but level ground with a twinaxle in tow. I have to say I agree with them.

It can catch in a few places but nothing serious.
A mate of mine had his old shape L200 submerged upto within a few inches of the roof.
He was stuck in the water for an hour with the engine still running and still managed to drive 50 miles home in it. They're quite tough!
As with all off-roading, you need to know the limits of the vehicle and, of course, your own limits as a driver.
The best L200's are bobtailed ones

It's 10 minutes long but worth it!

No problems with my one. 05 Old Shape Model

I got the power up grade kit shortly after I bought it which improves the torque nicely.
They are probably a bit old fashioned now but are ok to drive, comfortable and not too big compared to a Navara or LT200 which are quite long.
I have off roadish tyres and it still handles fairly well.
But these vehilcles are not for speed but for cruising and working.

Bigger speeds mean bigger fuel bill esp. above 85 on motorway.

Depends on your use.
Mine is a commercial 5 door which suits my needs perfectly.
i.e. just 2 front seats and large rear space similar to rear seats being folded but there are no seats!!

Softish supension which is comfortable.
Some other van like 4x4 can be fairly firmly sprung.

No complaints.

Does the job.

Hard to pick a best 4x4.

Depends on your use.
Car like and fast. Forrester turbo is pretty good, and older ones very good value too.

Looking at the photo's it appears you have managed to use the L200's off road ability to get onto a camp site.

Are they really that good?
