Having driven both - I'd go for the Honda just for the engine.
But you can get a Clio for about 12k new, which puts it in a different league.

She will love the 172 seriously..
I sold my scooby in november last year because i wanted a smaller car but with very good performance..so i went for a mk1 172 and i love it didn't think i would but i do and it really does perform well.

Now i dont want to start a Type R Vs 172 debate like on www.cliosport.net
But i really like my clio and i have also drove a Type R which i liked..but couldn't cope with the MPV style shape..
For more info have a look on the cliosport forum...

Hope this helps

Get the 172 will be cheaper to buy&insure&run & you wont have to wait as long as for a CT-R.

(also the new 172 - has an anti-stall ECU - always handy for the ladies)

only joking, im sure shes a very good driver before you start shouting at me.....

Get the 172. You have to spend another 2k odd on options on the CTR to get it to the same equipment level as a 172.

I have had my 172 for 7 months now and love it.

After driving both cars again today, we've decided on the Type R. The dealer has one in stock, fully loaded. In my opinion it drives better than the 172, and is MUCH quicker ! Plus it doesn't look like just another Civic, whereas the 172 looks like all the other Clios.
Better on corners, accelerates like a scalded cat, and whilst I was out in it, a standard MY02 Scooby had a go, and I beat him,...... sorry !
Scoobys beware, I'll be prowling after March 1st !!
Drive safe,

Darrell

Saw a 172 coming up fast today and raced past me! looked solid and not similar to noraml range. Later parked beside Type R didnt even notice it was that till i got out and saw go faster skirts.

Personal choice, Impreza then Type R cos the driving position is much better than 172 (off set) not good for tall people.

I was looking at the same scenario - but as the current Clio we have is totally unrealiable (15 months old) and other people I know have had problems with Renaults - and they seem to have a poor name anyway its the Honda - on import

Our 172 (new shape) is very pretty and very driveable. Might not have same outright pull as CTR but is very responsive in any gear at any RPM - suspect that might not be the case with the Honda.

Equipment level + interior + seats etc also very impressive on 172(especially compared with my MY01 wagon...)

Followed a CTR to work this morning and honestly think it looks a bit ugly... is black the only colour?

Would agree that 172 driving position may not be good for tall people. I put an induction kit on mine and ended up with less bhp but more torque at low revs ????

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

BTW CTR comes in Red, Silver and Black.

Red looks awful - very boyracer!

Black is the one to go for

Cool

Buying a new car for the Missus, she's drove both the Civic Type R and the Clio 172, and can't make her mind up !!!

Any views on this from my fellow members ??

Cheers,

Darrell
