Why do they sound so tinny/metallic ..?
Our chinese neighbour from across the road ALWAYS starts his motor and immediatly gives it full beans and takes off up the street ....
Maybe its the zorst falling off
- possible hes too rich to care whats happening to the engine -after the skool run hes back home for the large part of the rest o the day...

I know what you mean they don't sound meaty enough. Someone told me they lower the red line to 5k rpm until the engine is warm, dunno if this is true though. They do sound good ar 8k rpm though as one flew past me the other day.

The E46 sounds shallow and tinny with a high pitched zorst sound when warmed up, the E36 on the other hand has a deep rumble to it when cold and purrs like a cat when warmed up.

Didn't know that. Not really worth me trying it out. I've also been told that when at full throttle there is a click if you push a bit harder that increases the rev limit a little bit. I know the throttle clicks but never sure if it revs higher as I'm looking at the road at the time!

Just to be aware, a lot of cars these days will have the ign cut set to soft cut at 50% of max ign cut when wheel speed = 0.
This is for emissions testing.
Honda started doing this from about 2001, lots of cars have it now - infact it may even be one of those EEC directive thingies. I know my 57 plate smart cuts at 3500rpm when stood still.
The "M" cars from the mid 90s on had a set of leds on the tacho, they would light up red after about 5k rpm IIRC and then when the engine would get upto temp they would go out.

you can rev the ***** of an e46 if you want when its cold wont do it or any car much good though! A red line does appear on the rev counter telling you to be a little more sensitive! Its great for knowing when its warmed up! AS for the sound they are amzing at 7k+, I loved the rasp from mine it was a total contrast to the STI.

They were vastly inferior to the noise of my last Impreza Turbo, back in 2000!
Excluding the exhaust note, the M3's were superior cars though.

I got a E46 M3 and to get the best out of it you have to rev the nuts of it. One thing that did surprise me was how well it handles in the dry but in the wet is a different matter. To say it superior to a Impreza is a little misleading because they are completely different.

Can't ever recall hearing an Impreza Turbo but perhaps I've never really looked out for one.
