Ford Capri 2.8i
This guy I know has asked me to look out for a mint example of above car for him to buy. According to Classic Cars magazine's price guide, a mint regular 2.8i (1981 - 1987) should go for 4000 quid at a Dealer (3500 private sale), whereas one of the 1987 run-out model "280" models would go for double that. Seems a big difference to me for essentially the same car, or am I missing something?
I've already checked out P-heads and Autotrader. Any other suggestions for where to find one? Please note it MUST be mint and unmodified, so either time-warp original very low mileage condition, or fully restored. Also any tips on what problems to look out for?
Ta.

Rust is gonna be your main worry, check the front of the wings above the headlights, the seams where the wings weld on, especially the under sides along the bonnet edge, strut tops, floor pan where it starts to go the bulkhead, sills and the sill type bit of the boot floor.
The radio should look like it's part of the dash, a crappy little affair that often gets chopped out and replaced leaving a big hole in the dash. Also, the parcel shelf shouldn't have speakers in it.
The front calipers should be opposing two pots, look out for four pots off a Princess.
Check that the rear spoiler is in good nick and that the bolts haven't pulled out of it, they're rocking horse poo!
Good luck and don't forget to post pics of it!

When I was young, my dad always had a Capri. Too young to remember them all, but my lasting memories is of when he owned a White 3.0S (RPT 37OV) and taking me out on Sunday morning just to blast it about. Pretty fast in there day. It eventually got knicked after 3 years and was found upside down in a cornfield.
He bought a new 2.8s in Black. That got knicked after a couple of months.

These are the Pistonheads ones:
Ford : FORD CAPRI 2.8i SPECIAL
Ford : ford capri brooklands
Ford : Ford Capri 280 Brooklands
I like the look of that middle one myself.

Does it have to be the 2.8I?
I know of two 3.0 (or 3 if you include a 3.2 Touring Car ) that are up for auction next Tuesday. Estimated to go for £5-7K

The 280 Brooklands was a limited edition at the very end of the MkIII production, they are all 1987 E Registration.
Mechanically they were the same as 2.8Injection, but with 15" RS type wheels, black leather seats and all in Brooklands green, if I remember correctly.
My dad still has a MKII and D Reg laser lying about in his garage , he sold his 2.8i 3 years ago

Look out for late (B - D) 2.8 Specials, they are the best of the bunch, with LSD, half leather interior and 13" 7 spoke rims.
Avoid metallic ones, unless they've had a proper respray with decent quality paint. Metallic paint of that era was porous, and unless the top lacquer coat was properly applied (and remember we're talking about Ford here ) the panels beneath will be well on their way back to nature.
Some panels are still available but others, i.e; wings, door skins tailgates etc are like rocking horse poo, and priced accordingly
Brooklands have always been seriously over-rated Yes they had a leather interior and 15" wheels, but they were also shoddily built run-out models with badly applied paint and even less underseal than normal You can easily get an Injection or a Special up to way better than Brookie spec for a lot less than the difference in price.
Olly, sometime of these parts has owned a 2.8 Injection for years, this one in fact:
I'll give him a nudge to show his face and give you the full lowdown

PS: Don't be conned into having the 'unleaded' conversion done on the heads
Thanks to it's German origins, the 2.8 cologne V6 was designed from the outset to run on unleaded fuel.
The one in my XR4x4 did over 220k miles before a burst rad caused its to overheat and crack it's heads
The valve seats were still mint, as are the seats on the car's 160k mile old replacement engine
And don't be too worried if it leaks a bit of oil, "they all do that sir", I think it was Ford's idea of underbody corrosion protection

Not at all, they stopped building them in 87, so if it was registered at the time it would have been an E
There are known to be several running round on F and G plates though, they're best avoided IMO because, the odd Dealer retained exception aside, they all spent their formative years sitting in a field waiting for muppet to buy them

You could also have a look in Classic Car Weekly Buying Selling News magazine, I was surprised at how many 'Classics' were for sale in there.
And the prices seemed better than that you find on Ebay etc , the mag is available from most outlets as well, which reminds me, I need to pick myself a copy up

It's probably kosher, if I remember rightly Brookies came out in mid '87, so a few demos would have been registered by dealers prior to August 1st
In fact given the market at that time, Ford probably required dealers to register at least one just to make the sales figures look better

my dad used to have a 2.8 injection about 10 years ago. I remember it well as it felt very quick and made a good noise. It was a 2 tone light blue and silver one. It chirped its tyres on its tiny 13" alloys everywhere it went though, and its fuel economy was a lot worse than my Impreza
