Cheap run around
Here we go again... (how many of these threads )
My Golf V6 4Motion is sitting on the drive. It needs a service and some work doing to the front off-side (suspension, nothing horrendous) but I don't drive it as I am catching the train to work and cycling home.
It's been on the drive so long it now has cobwebs in the wheel arches.
It's a W plate (2000) with 100K on the clock (so just run in as a V6!) and apparently worth about £4K .
So what the heck can I get as a cheap run around to get me to / from work when necessary (need to get things from cash and carry... or go to off-site locations)
Given that I will have about £5K maximum to spend, has anyone got any ideas? I'd want to fit a bike rack on the back, and my wife has a diesel Vectra for bigger loads so I won't need much capacity. It's 15 miles to work and I was doing the odd weekend hop, but really very little mileage.
It's a waste of a good car at the moment, so I reckon someone else could get some use out of it - I just need something to replace it with, and I'm stumped.

Do you want a diesel? how big does it have to be? how many miles will you do? do you go on the motorway a lot?
Unless you do big miles i'd stay clear of a diesel as the initial purchase cost plus servicing and the fact it wouyld be probably higher mileage would outweigh the advantages of a small 1.4 petrol.
Do you need a big car? if not then maybe buyt a nice tidy Polo/Fiesta etc.
If you do the majority of your travelling on a Motorway then maybe sometrhing with a bit more ummphh.
If you could stretch a bit then maybe a new shape Yaris - they are superb cars, nippy with great fuel economy 50mpg+ and very very cheap to run.

having read your thread properley this time i'd say go for a small petrol car i.e. Fiesta/Polo/Corsa, but as above i'm not sure how much the new Yaris has dropped to but they are a superb car

there was me loading the OP with LOADS of information... I dunno, some people
Small petrol was what I was thinking (for the above reasons), but I'd like something that was 'fun' to drive. There's only so much A to B you can do without losing your soul in a boring car
