Default Driving myself up the wall Part 482

Every now and then I have a bit of a wobble about my car(s).

I currently have a Skyline GTR (R33) and a "project" Toyota Soarer 4.0GT.

The GTR is slowly being modded up to about 500bhp (I have nearly all the bits now, just waiting for injectors and a fuel pump). I'm not sure what I'm doing with the Soarer but have some ideas.

Here's the options I'm looking at:

1) Keep GTR and make the Soarer into a track car (stripped, caged, manual box conversion, supercharger etc.)

2) Sell GTR and buy new Mini Cooper S and make Soarer into a track car etc. etc. (will free up some money as I could buy the Mini and fuel it for about the same as I'm spending just on fuel for the GTR)

3) Sell GTR, sell Soarer and buy sensible, grown up car (Merc, BMW big engined diesel) and stop messing arond with cars

4) Keep GTR, sell Soarer, buy £1000 cheap to run snotter off eBay for daily use turn GTR into a track car.

What would you do?

3, then in another year look to buy a track car, as by then prices will have bottomed out on hot hatches.

I think you have a 5th option.

The GTR is so near to being the 500bhp car you want it to be what is the point of selling it?

So keep the GTR and get it to 500bhp. You then have a car that you can drive on the road and the track albeit not a dedicated track car.

Then sell the Soarer, not sure why you want the Soarer on the track when you have a GTR. Requires a lot to convert it and the GTR would probably beat it even with the GTR in road trim anyway or near enough.

So get rid of the Soarer and buy a £1000 workhorse off Ebay or from the auctions.

Then when funds allow get a 205GTI and make it a dedicated track car.

That way you have a cheap runaround, a monster road car that you can take on the track when you feel that way inclined and a dedicated track car that you can really let rip with.

My 2 cents worth.

You have a Soarer? Have you spoken with Mycroft about it?

Sorry I'd have posted earlier but I only just recalled the username.

Sell both, neither will make good track cars.

I went for option 3, once you have lost faith/heart in a project there is simply no point in continuing with it. So I sold my 205 and all my bits/tools and went for a quick std car (Focus ST) so I could stop messing with cars and concentrate on family life/house.

However...it didn't take long to get the remap, CAIS is coming in the next few weeks plus exhaust, then a new intercooler and some springs, possibly a turbo later on

Once you have a car modding/messing bug I don't think it goes easily.

Mycroft advised me to buy a manual twin turbo so naturally I bought a V8 auto

Anyhoo, I think f1_fan wins the fun size Mars bar as it's closest to what "felt" like the best thing to do.

On a side note, I need to rebuild the power steering pump on the Soarer. For a laugh, I called my local Toyota dealer and asked if they did a rebuild kit for a 17 year old, relatively rare, grey import. It turns out they did and it took less than 24 hours to get it delivered and was less than £50 all in.

I'm in a similar boat. I bought a Eunos for some summer and track day fun.

Unfortunately I bought a pup and it has spent more time off the road that on it. I've lost all confidence in it and am getting rid with a view to buying a nice hot hatch and then hire track cars. I only do a couple a year and don't have the time to devote to a project car that requires a lot of effort putting in.

Option 6: LPG Soarer...

If BMW 335d's were cheaper or 123d's came with a DSG type gearbox that'd be Options 7&8
