We seem to be getting intermitent problems with the speedo just stopping on the wife's clio, seems to go and then come back now and again, does anyone have any idea what this could be?

What age of Clio is it? Our old MY2000 had problems where it would either stop or add a random amount of speed to your actual speed, I reckon it's the only 1.6 Clio to see 140 on the clock. In the end we had to replace the clocks with a set off eBay

It's a 1.6 RXE and is a V reg 1999.

Does it ever "jump up" to a speed or stick at a certain speed or is it simply a case of it either works normally or not at all?

Doesn't jump up, just dies then springs back to life whenever.

Does the mileage still go up when the speedo isn't working? If it does, it's probably the speedo itself is bust, if not, it may be the speed sensor in the gearbox.

Yes the mileage does go up, how easy is this to get fixed?
