I've got one, they are usually well woking machines but 98R registered ones have a deinate lambda sensor problem. You can have a lot of fun with them (especially if you spend like 2k!)

Moe

I'm either going for a new Import or a used one from a UK dealer.

I've got a Scoob and an M Coupe at the moment, but I am considering the Pug because it's supposed to be good fun and economical.

When inspecting are there any things I should look out for on these cars?

Thanks

Sonu

Alot of deals here in the UK I would not buy brand new though.

If you buy one which is a 1,2,3 years old make sure the fuel sensor is working fine the only way to find out is when your blasting around and the car behaves like its conking out...common prob also the alarm sensors, elec's, and never over fill the fuel! when filling up when you hear the click (meaning full) stop there, trying to round it up to the nearest pound or so will cause problems. The fuel pipe under the bonnet (topleft corner) pops off spilling all the fuel on the road. That is a pressure problem ok as long as you stop when you hear the click.

All so when the battery get disconected the ECU need to be reset by the PUG Select monitor or it will drive like crap and give you incorrect fault codes.

Check the head gasket for leaks or new work, the rad for any stop chips/leaks, look under the oil cap & rad cap for any yellow gunk.

If your buying 2nd hand I would say get one with sub 20k miles!

Brakes need to be checked for abused disks as there are no warning lights on the pugs.

Std back boxes dont last for over 18 months if your lucky

The gearbox & clutch also! almost as bad as a scoob. When on idle check for release bearing noise it will go once you put the clutch down I would want a new clutch & release bearing as the old one may be on its way out.

Otherwise it is a top motor.

I would only do some light mods such as:

Manifold and straight trough pipe, induction kit (piperX) with cold air pipe.

Lowering springs 60mm

Quick shift

gti 6 big brake upgrade.

no bigger than 15" wheels (14 are std)195 45 15. the car will handle better than a scoob any day.

When I added the above components the car would come off the clock with very little effort 140mph +!!!

Speak with peugeot ecosse (Diane & Matt or Gavin) tell them you know me

Good luck, hope that helps

Moe

They are brilliant little cars - I used to own one before I got the Clio 172.

Definitely watch out for head gasket problems, this is a common problem on the 106 GTi.
The engine idles quite roughly, this is normal so don't worry about it.
Try to get one that is less than 12 months old - these cars have 130bhp instead of the quoted 120bhp (to do with Peugeot changing the engine management system).

DON'T in any way change the suspension. I lowered mine by 40mm and wrecked the handling
In fact I would actually recommend that you keep it totally standard except perhaps for the ICE.

Peugeot dealerships are sh*te - IMHO you should steer well clear of them! Instead, find a reputable specialist.
I spoke to Dianne at Ecosse on a couple of occasions and found that she was of no help at all, I don't know whether I caught her on a bad day but I certainly wouldn't put my custom with Ecosse.
By far the best garage was a garage called Skip Brown Cars who are based in Cheshire, if you need anything doing I would 100% recommend you talk to them!

I've had my scoob 16 months now. Before that I had a Pug 106Gti.

I sold it after owning it for 18 months from new. It had done 21k miles and cost me £14k new. I couldn't find a buyer quick enough and ended up selling it back to the garage I bought it from for £7.4k.

The car was China Blue (Dark Metallic Blue)and had the wheels done in the same gold as the Williams. I found the colour to have the same problem as the DBM Scoobs in that after 21.5k the bonnet was all scratched and the body kit had become peppered with stone chips.

So my advice would be to go for a lighter colour, get some big mudflaps to stop the bodykit getting chipped and don't buy a new one due to the depreciation hit (I think the car market is saturated with used cars and so Supply and Demand means used values are poor). Also go for 98S reg onwards as these come with the half leather seats as standard.

On the plus side, I agree with the above. The Pug handles and brakes leagues better than my MY00 UK spec. I used to be able to brake late and throw it into bends whereas the scoob does not give me the confidence to do so.

I also saw some program a couple of years ago which was at the Silverstone Super Special Stage. This had a number of top rally drivers from the British scene and they went round the circuit in different cars. For example, they had an Astra, Seat and of course the Pug 106GTi. All of these cars were bascially standard road cars. When the drivers were interviewed afterwards it become obvious that the Pug was by far and away the best car as when they steered to where they wanted to go it did exactly that. These drivers sounded so enthusiastic about the little car.

Damian.
