Default Citroen Xsara Picasso - diesel

I am looking for the above car, around 3-4k, so I should get a 2002 plate.
Has anybody any experience of these cars?

Are there any common faults, what is the difference in SX, and LX models and what is that thing in the boot?

Thanks

They are French

A few friends have them, some are in the garage more than out, others have gone on forever. Seems you need a bit of luck with them.

I have just bought 54 plate 1.6 for my mrs for 5k. We were looking at the deisel, but the mrs only does about 4000 miles a year so the petrol was the better option for us as it meant we could go a year newer. We have found it really practical, comfortable and although it is a petrol its still returns about 35 mpg around town and 45mpg on a run. I didnt find alot of difference in any of the specs, I would say just get as new as you can. Being a 1.6 and a reasonably big car it is slow, but then its not meant to be fast and i've got the scoob in the garage so who cares.

I'm looking at these too. I was thinking about the diesel, but it won't be doing mega mileage and the price of diesel these days!

French cars have always been good to me.

Renault 172, Peugeot 205 GTI's and a diesel, Saxo VTS. All very reliable when I owned them.

My sister has owned 2 of these (though not diesel) and had no problems with them.
The 2ltr HDI is a pretty good unit, not mega powerful but will just keep on chugging along, more torque and more ecenomical than the old 1.9 TD engine though down by 2bhp on power.
Bit of a bargain car, especially if you want the room for stuff in the back as the Picasso is pretty spacious for its size

Renault 172.....<snip>. All very reliable when I owned them.
<thud>

Can you give me some lottery numbers

Anyhoo Xsara Picasso: Can't knock them for the money.

Dodgy gearshifters (go sloppy, and the return spring that centres the stick breaks, usually - caused by women being too heavy handed with the shifter (ooer ) ). Bit of sloppyness on the front steering bushes (caused by women banging them onto full-lock and bouncing up and over curbs). LCD dash going on the fritz (not women related....I think )

Not to forget oil consumption on the petrol engines; keep an regular eye on the levels and its will be fine (unlike women, who'll never check it between services, and run it until the idiot light comes on, by which time the engine is ruined ).

1.6 HDi 110bhp diesel is the best one of the lot in terms of both power and econmy. But they do fetch a premium because of that.

They're pretty reliable

LX is the middle of the range trim level, SX is the top one. Gets extras like alloys, air con, cd changer etc as far as i'm aware.

I know 2 people with them and both say they'll never get another Citroen. That was enough to stop me buying one.

Like most french cars the trim falls off but whats underneath will keep going and entertain more than reasonably - why else is it the biggest selling mpv...!

Mrs Dunk ran a 2.0 hdi for a fair few years, does what it's designed for and gave 45mpg, and 48mpg when remapped, no reliability issues apart from a new clutch.

Lol Id best not tell you what has gone wrong with a guy at works. It would take me a good hour to type it up. I think his least favourite encouter was having complete engine failure on the outside line of the M25 and causing a massive tailback until the police arrived

If you want a French car get one with at least a years, manufacturers warranty.... you'll probably need it

If you buy one that is older than 3 years... well you take your chances and all that

Last French car we had was a C2 VTS, nice little car (my girlfriends) but when she sold it, it was on its 3rd alternator at 18 months old

WELL i have one and love it ours is a 1.6sx petrol ex motability.
ours is brilliant, on a run to north wales we get 50 mpg, around town 30 mpg.
in three years it need an indicator stalk and thats it, and we got that from gsf.
if i was you i would go to bca on a motobility day and get a three year old one ours had 9000 miles on the clock. honestly i wasnt over keen on getting a french car b ut the fact that gsf sell all the bits for them you wont have a problem. honestly hand on heart ours as been superb. and would never sell it
