I had a 53 plate 130 TDCI - used to average 48mpg - that was over a 70/30 split of motorway and town driving.

I never had any major prob's with mine, they are however prone to a few things. The main points to get checked are - EGR valave prone to failure / blocking causing excessive smoke under acceleration, Diesel Injector failure on higher mileage examples, approx 80k plus, Clutch faults (can't remember the specifics but think this was ironed out on later models. Oh and check the drivers side door trim where you rest your elbow as they are prone to cracking....

Other than that though, cracking cars for the money. Plenty of grunt, great for long distances, comfortable.

If you get an estate I have a hatchbag bootliner and genuine ford dog guard going cheap

Regards

GB

chap at work has an 02.

injectors failed once (two of them) and cost him an arm and a leg. then the fuel pump failed and buggered up two injectors. This cost him over a grand at an independent garage to diagnose and fix

I've got a Sept 03 (53) Ghia X model. I refused to settle for one of a lower spec and they're not much more £ for a lot of toys. Had it for 6 months and 4,000 miles. Only problem so far has been a loose heatshield.

Getting about 40 mpg due to 80% town driving. You can drive them for hundreds of miles without really getting tired. Very relaxing and easy to get comfy.

£145 road tax and my insurance is about £200. Happy days

One thing that is annoying me though is rust at the bottom of the doors Its only 4 1/2 years old

i have heard about the egr failure and people recommend getting them changed at the service intervals, is there any way to check the injectors or clutch for the problems?

My mate had an 03 and two injectors failed and he ended up paying thousands to get the engine fixed. He had only done 60K but I must admit hammered it everywhere he went.

Had 2 TDCI's. First was a ghia x that had done 124k miles, 2002, second was a 2004 54 plate basic 115bhp LX. Used it as a work horse a couple of summers back and did about 15k miles in 6 months. had a few problems with leaking fuel pipes but nothing expensive and averaged 38 mpg, but that was flat out everywhere. Can't fault it as it does everything you ask of it. Traveled for miles and never tired of it. Not the most exciting car but does everything very well. You can't go wrong.

If you don't want the image of the Mondeo then get an X Type - although for the same car you are paying a premium.

Yep the only main issues are the injectors/pump on high miles but the Dual Mass Flywheels can fail suddenly and its an expensive things to sort out.

I'm just waiting for that to happen - cost £300 just to have diagnosis and the injectors re-programmed. They reckon at least one is on it's way out, at £500.
I think it's completely unacceptable for a <6 year old 80k mile car. Ironically I traded a perfectly good 1996 V70 with 140k, as I thought it may be heading for large bills.

Other than this it is a good car, but quite noisy at speed. Nice engine and very chuckable.

Been done a fortnight now and very happy with the results. When I got it remapped i decieded to only take it up 30BHP,I could have had it up to 180-190BHP but as the car is in daily use decided against it.I was told the 2.0l TDCI engine was 'in a very mild state of tune standard' now its alot smoother and pulls very well in all gears.
