My 50 something year old auntie drives a '98 740IL auto, that thing averages 23 mpg with he behind the wheel. I usually find that 75% of the manufacturers combined mpg figure is about what I get out of a car. Use this and it won't be any worse

23 isnt bad, thats what I get from my Saab 9-3 Aero but I only do a short commute, I would expect better if I did more distance, I did look at the 7 series before getting it but the consumption did put me off, needent have worried !
The 540 is a nice car but I beleive gets recirculting ball steering rather than rack and pinion as in the smaller engined variants so the steering isnt as direct or something.
Cant imagine the MPG being any worse than a Scoob.

At that age (and keeping it brief):
Rust, sloppy bushes (they don't age well), worn shocks, various electronics expiring. And ex dealer forecourt cars with bad body repairs (hence the rust).
Otherwise nothing else major; engine can sludge up when serviced on the limit of the indicator system (oil should really be changed annually). But they don't seem to suffer any worse for it.
Wheel wobble @ 50mph will be tired suspension.. pretty much all e39s at this age will have suspension past its sell-by date. Trust me. Yes they'll still fly through MOTs forever regardless, but the ride and handling isn't as nice. Which detroriates so it tends to feel and steer like a boat. Nothing a set of M-sport bushes all round and a set of Bilsteins doesn't fix (not cheap mind).
The above accounts to far more with steering feel than the type of steering mechanism fitted, I assure you.
