Mk2 Honda CRX 1.6 16v
It's cost me about £1500, to get the car, fit a manfold, full stainless steel exhaust system, air inductor, strut braces front and rear, 15" wheels with Yokohama (to replace the 14" wheels), Momo steering wheel, Momo bucket seats, a 4 point harness, replace the brake calipers, uprate the brake pads, replace a rusty sunroof with a carbon replacement panel and a carbon bonnet.
Most of these items were sourced secondhand and probably owes me closer to £1750 with labour, etc for some of the work as well as an alternator.

Citroen Saxo VTS (cheap as chips)
Xsara VTS (dirt cheap and about the same as a Pug 306gti)
Pug 205 gti
French cars are obviously pretty cheap but tend to handle well. Yes they rattle, but I guess this isn't going to matter when you're caning it around track.

Or you could do what I'm doing and choose something completely inappropriate. I'm thinking of stripping my Toyota Soarer 4.0 V8 auto. Admittedly I'm planning to use it for the drags rather than track work, but I'll still throw it around a roundy-roundy circuit for the hell of it.

In my opinion buying something like a westfield or caterham for 5 grand is better than a cheapo track day car. Not least because, if you don't crash it, you'll get all your money back when you come to sell it and you won't have to do much if any preparation to make it track day ready.

If you like tinkering and spannering, then part of hte fun is making a "normal" car into a trackcar!
I've enjoyed most of the conversion my car has gone through, but there have been days when I would have sold it or torched it!!!
Fancy a track ready CRX for £1500??

You're dead right GC8 - £1500 for the donor car IMHO.
I'm looking at a 106 XSi at the moment, as wifey wouldn't be too happy if her "6" suddenly vanished!!
Obviously, the donor car dictates the further investment, but on a sorted FWD, you'd be looking at another £4K tops? (inc labour)

Depends how serious you are about it I guess. My track weapon is a 1994 ex Wiltshire police Vauxhall Senator with 250k on it. RWD fun for sessions when I want to drift it. Koni adjustables all round, strut brace, decent brakes, LSD, stripped out and I don't give a **** if it expires on me. Just flat out, tail out, fun. If you want to be more serious though, £1500 won't go very far.
