Had a blast in a 2001 RS4 ....
Guy at work has an Audi RS4 2001. He says it's got just over 430bhp & 550nm ****, that thing can shift. I've never been in anything that punches you in the back so hard when you hit 4th gear @ 100+. He wouldn't give me a drive of it though
I knew they were quick, but heck!
Anyone else experienced one of these?

Yes, I've been lucky enough to drive quite a few RS Audis- RS2, RS6, RS4 B5 and RS4 B7.
The B5 was MRC tuned and was seriously quick, felt faster than the RS6 and had a massive kick from 3.5-5.5K. Problem with it, like the RS6 is that it just wasn't that much fun to drive once you got over the power buzz.
The RS2 was great, real old school fun and plenty of feedback but even that was nowhere near as good as the B7, not as quick as the B5 but awesomely good fun with real driving pleasure to be had even at more modest speeds.
B7 is the best, the B5 is just a one trick pony and fragile to boot if you believe what the specialists tell you.

Not driven any of the RS's but would definately like to try out this one and the newer B7.

The B5 steering is almost feel free and it's brakes are crazily over servoed. That's not what makes it an average drive though, it's hard to explain but the car just doesn't 'flow' like something that's really rewarding. It feels really broken up, a real blunt instrument where you monster the straights, then hammer the brakes and bludgeon the corners into submission.
You might well be going faster than most other vehicles but I've enjoyed driving a base model supermini more!

I'm still trying to get him to give me a go behind the wheel! More info too. It is also MRC custom remapped with a Miltek cat-back and upgraded brakes (brakes were very effective). He says the standard brakes were not up to the job!!

I was a co-driver in a B5 RS4 down to Le Mans back in 2005. Great memories of that trip, especially making good progress with some Morgans chasing us on the N134! Unfortunately the clutch managed to have a fit in the centre of Le Mans town and we had to nurse the car back to Aberdeen - coming up the hill out of Dover, I tried to keep up with some bikes and a WRX, but the clutch was slipping too badly
After driving that RS4 extensively and another mates B5 S4, I'd have to say that there's not a lot in it. If was my money, I think I'd go for the S4 and use the difference for a bit of tuning. The B5 S4s are eminently tunable
