BMW M5

Hi Alan
I have a 01 and its one of the best cars I have ever owned, supremely fast, comfortable, understated and will always put a smile on your face
I would go for one late 2000 on as there were some mods made to the engine (vanos) interior and headlights
Check M5board.com for all info
PS selling mine at the mo, check my profile
Cheers

Hi Alan
I have a March 2000 E39 M5 what a car 111k no issues on the car. Recent new clutch/pressure plate/flywheel/release bearing. Car flies through mot. It is a superb cruiser. We went from M.Keynes to Fort William recently for a marathon. Only stopped for fuel, what a high speed cruiser.
I will be selling mine shortly too. Looking at c £10k

Why are you interested in one in the first place?
Plus, you say it's not as fast as you current Impreza, does your Impreza have mods.
(I read 500/540 but didn't want to assume that was output figures)

Only 1 reason it has to go.it doesn't have six seats....number 4 child on the way!
It pains me to think it has to turn into a people carrier..........at least I have a scooby to fall back on
Mind you maybe a roof box would do!!!!!.. Then i could keep it

I was chatting to my friend hypothetically about getting an M5, he's convinced I'll miss my Jap go cart, as he puts it.
You can get them mapped to about 430 if you are lucky but I think if I was in your shoes with that output plus, presumably, extensive handling mods, you would miss the thrills that the Impreza would deliver.

I got a 02 plate and my brother has a 01 plate....
Number 1: do not let high milleage put you off....these go one for ever...Mine is fully loaded with a Remap and a aftermarket exhaust...and it drives like a dream...I have owned two Scoobies...of which one was heavily modifed...but when i got the M5 iv loved every single day of it..specially the fact that i do not have to worry about the Turbo's blowing or the Head gaskit going etc....but Scoobies are great cars...but i am sure you will love the M5..
I ask my self the question..what car next...and that is one question i am unable to answer...coz the M5 is allot of a car for the money that you will pay...
Lastly..got for the Facelift model...if your budget allows it...

I'll tell you how much I love mine...
I really need the practicality of an estate but refuse to spend 50k+ on an RS4 avant or M5 touring when (from first-hand experience of all three) I much *much* prefer the E39 M5. Also because its going to be stuffed with muddy bikes and gear and left in dodgy wooded car parks.
So, I'm seriously looking into converting a 540i touring E39 to an M5 using my running gear and a crapped out old 540i touring as a donor.
I had the idea a long time ago, but someone on the mtorque forum is currently doing it, and I'm watching with interest!!!

Per my post above, I've driven both, plus the new RS4, and I think the e39 M5 tops both for the driving experience.

Honestly. I'm surprised you're surprised tbh.
For what it is, its about perfect. The power to weight and the power delivery is so perfectly matched, and its outright performance in relation to its wheel control and handling ability, as a package it just means you can literally make it dance.
And yet its a whacking great 1700kg luxury saloon!!!
Only three complaints are chocolate brakes (replaced with APs), muted exhaust (sorted with H&S system) and agricultural gearshift (rogue shortshift kit).
I am honestly about as objective as they come, I just love driving. The E60 has one of the greatest engines in existence, the RS4 has a fabulous interior, but both are flawed / compromised when it comes to the complete dynamic package. Add in the 15k price tag for a good E39 and I don't think it can be touched at the moment.

What I mean by this btw is that, it goes like stink, revs like mad yet a)has endless torque (it pulls almost from idle in 6th!) but b) the power doesnt totally dominate grip. In the E60 and some of the AMG mercs you can almost spin up *too* easily. In the E39 you never feel wanting for power, you can drift on demand, yet you always know exactly how the power is going to come in in any given situation, which makes for devastating real-world performance even on b-roads (I regularly drive across wales, dartmoor and scotland on roads that twice broke my suspension on the RS6).

Covering the Wales region over Christmas and we're off the pace year to date, so I've given myself Christmas day off and that's my lot. Will be my first ever Christmas away from the Motherland.
Give me a shout next time you're up in the Valleys and we'll have a beer.
