A mate has just got the new S3 - It's very nice.
If the mk5 R32 had a bit more power but looked like the S3, that'd be my choice!

Surely hot hatches should be small & lightweight?

I think nowadays we should differentiate "Super-hatches" and "Hot-hatches".

The best "Super-hatches" have 250 or more hp, usually 4wd or rwd, often a fair bit of luxury too, and cost well above 20k.

Current pick of the crop seem to be R32, S3, 130iM, and soon probably the new Sti and the 135iM.

"Hot-hatches" tend to be smaller and lighter, less power (around the 180-220 mark), usually fwd, and often less luxurious.

Current pick of the crop seem to be R26, RS, Type-R, Cooper-S, GTI, ecc.

The standard equipment is right pathetic! The previous generation was way better in that aspect, and it was cheaper too!

Yes but the S3 is still nice and the fastest current hot hatch.

I preferred the mk4 R32 (which I had for a year) to the old S3 (by miles!) but prefer the new S3 to the mk5 R32.

The Clio was the last Hot Hatch that fitted the original brief, nowadays stuff like the S3 is fantastic but about a million miles from the MK2 16v GTI that WWSD mentioned, it bears more relation to the original Quattro or other big fast Audi's.

Focus ST is a Volvo T5 with some handling thrown in.

Small, light, quick (not ballisticly fast), nimble front drive hatch with some red bits round the bumpers.

There is still the Fiesta ST which is nearer, Clio 197 and C2 VTS are also Hot Hatches, the Astra VXR, Focus ST and S3 etc should get a new category.
