I researched these about 2 months ago when I was looking for a smaller second car...might be useful
On looks alone I think they are very cool indeed, but try before you buy because I was left cold.
1. There are loads of these around at the moment as they are a bugger to sell second hand. The insurance is about Grp 13 and the youngsters that want to buy them can't afford the insurance. The salesman admitted to me that they are having trouble shifting them.
2. As there are loads around you can afford to be very picky. You should consider negotiating new, as the price difference is not that much compared to second hand when you consider condition.
3. The leather seats are much more comfortable than the half leather seats.
4. The interior is ok but the difference between the 22k second hand ones I looked at and the 10k ones was quite marked. I am not sure they would suit high mile driving for durability.
5. Performance wise they are disappointing. For a 2ltr mondeo engine it runs out of steam pretty quick. It definitely needs a turbo to deliver the ST brand promise. It quotes 150 bhp but I am not sure where it is hidden ? It does go if you floor it all the time (and I mean floor it!) but then you will never return the 38mpg it claims.
6. The suspension is not sporty it is just harsh. On cornering hard and on uneven ground the cabin rattles alot, especially the rear view mirror. The 17” rims ruin the ride too and are totally unjustified on a car of this size and power.
7. As a second hand buyer I noticed the fiesta bonnet is a magnet for stone chips and all of the front alloys, even on the sub 10k models, were kerbed.
8. Pollen filters came up as a potential area for water intrusion on the fiesta
9. One drainage hole in the huge doors, reports of internal rusting if these get blocked and aren't spotted.
10. I was impressed with the boot size.
Maybe an ok second car but then I think the Zetec S is better suited.
I went with money to buy one and I went home with it still in my pocket.
No offence to FST drivers, just not for me.

My wife and I drove one as a potential replacement for her car last week and I made exactly the same observations about the performance.
I also found the driving position to be high and the Ford salesman to be a 20 year old, ignorant pr!ck!
The Vauxhall salesman was much nicer, giving us the keys to a Corsa VXR and letting us have it for an hour.

I started out looking for a Zetec S ... 1600cc and all that.
But the MPG between the two wasnt that different and the RFL is £165 on the ST, not too bad.
AT 150bhp, that not a lot really now a days I suppose

That looks a terrible car ....
It looks like they use glue for paintwork and then ram raided halfords.
I think the basic new shape corsa in black looks more sporty that the VXR

i know this is not really about the fiesta st, but i recently purchased a focus st170, and have to say the i noticed the same problems as previously mentioned, considering it is supposed to have 170 bhp, it hides it very well, i struggled to keep up with a passat deisel yesterday on the way home, it is even more depressing when my scoob sits in the garage and only comes out at weekends, gotta say though the build quality of the focus impressed me, and im not a ford person at all, still wished id bought the civic type r over the focus though

The VXR is a good drive and the wife liked it a lot. The seats are excellent and the whole car is good value for money. I can't get over the fact that it's a Corsa though.

My sons girlfriend has one and I have to say, it's quite a nice little car! Quick enough for what it is and excellent handling. Chris says it's not bad - and he drives an EVO IX FQ320! She's got Eibach springs, Piper exhaust and the Dreamscience map (which, she admits, has done virtually nothing!) Seems the Duratec engine doesn't respond much to such mild tuning.
On a practical basis, there is a lot more leg room in the back than my 03 STi!
Worth considering - not sure about the stripes over the top, though!

Fastest overtaking car Vauxhall do (apart from VXR) is the Astra 1.9tdi. worht a look if you are wanting something to do good miles and have performance - same with any performance diesel (Skoda VRs etc)
