Default Mk 3 Goff GTI probs

Can anyone offer advice before it goes to a garage.

Mk 3 Golf 2.0 GTI 56 k miles MY97

The car cut out completely today without any warning and took about 10 mins before it could be restarted. The car had been running for around 20 mins and wasn't overheating. Plenty of fuel in the tank and recent plugs.
The car starts 1st time every morning when engine is cold but after it has been running for say more than 5-10 mins it can be difficult to restart. This resarting problem is very intermitent and might only happen say once out of every 10-15 times it requires starting.

Is there anything obvious that springs to mind.

Idle Stab valve may need cleaning. WD 40 does the trick or the fuel filter may be dirty.

A friend had exactly the same problem with his 16v Mk3; from what I remember, theres a multi plug connector near the manifold, the insulation often gets damaged when removing the oil filter (he 'repaired' his before damaging it again when changing the oil), the original cause is the plastic getting brittle from the heat.

Eventually he replaced the connector at a cost of £90 but was able to run a temporary repair for a fair while.
