Are gas guzzlers dying out?
Just noticed the number of threads looking for a cheap and economical car to go "with" a petrol munching Scooby (or similar).
Now super unleaded is way over a quid a litre, is the high performance petrol starting to lose it's appeal?
A real shame as I love a decent petrol but my perfect car is now a soot chucker - 335d BMW.
I'd just like an Ariel Atom in the garage too!

More the question are Subaru's and the likes of EVO's dying? i know loads of people who are selling their cars due to the ever increasing rise in Petrol.
You only have to look at Pistonheads classifieds.
qand yes i'm one of them, had mine up for ages and all i've had is farting about and timewasters, so like a lot of people i will get a runabout and use the Scoob at weekends.

I'm looking to bring a nice 5.7l Corvette C5 Z06 into the country.
Two of my brothers have a 3l Supra and a 3.5l BMW, that'll mean an average of over 4 litres per car.

Ive just sold my Impreza after 6 years of Subaru ownership and cany see me going back, at the moment im driving a Ford Ka and its a nice feeling knowing when you fill up with petrol its going to be a while before you have to make a return visit .
Im pretty sure my next car will be a Diesel, probably an Audi A4 or a BMW 3 or 5 series.

Matt - A black new shape S3 has "moved in" just down the road - Very nice indeed.
How's yours and did you see the Evo review on it?
Very quick motor!
I've never been hugely worried about the cost of a thirsty car - It's the range between stops that gets me.
Anything under 250 miles on a tank really starts to grate when trying to make good progress on a long journey.
I'd rather stop when I want to, not when my car has run out of fuel - Again!

Are Gas Guzzlers dying out?
Sales of Gas Guzzling Performance SUV are up every year. So no, Gas guzzlers are not dying out.
For SUV's, if you can afford to buy one (£50k+) you don't really care about the cost of filling up.
However, like said above gas guzzling cars (Impreza's & Evo's) I believe are taking a hit. There seams to be alot of cars out there that are almost as quick but return better mpg.

I would never go back to a high performance large petrol engine, for me on the road the vast majority of the time I dont get to drive like I would like to and therefore use the performance. A large capacity TD for me everytime, effortless at going fast albeit without quite the same driving experience but everything in life is a compromise.

Typically, my journies involve motorways with a bit of hooning thrown in and although I've got a fuel card having to stop so frequently is a pain in the ****.

They very slightly prefer the 130i but I'd have the S3 any day.
Go pay your £4 and get a copy!

Surely the cost of buying/owning/servicing/insuring/taxing/repairing an old diesel runaround is more expensive than putting in an extra £20 a week in fuel?
I'd do the maths, if I could be arsed.

Not a fan of the 1 series, just don't like the looks, very competent car I'm sure but i do like a Turbo
5.6 sounds about right, slower of the mark than an Sti but I suspect would be similar in gear. Difficult to compare as i had a Rover 214 in between so judgement clouded. Would be interested in trying an S3 with a 310bhp bluefin map, should be a hoot.
You decided on the Astra replacement?

Don't like the 1 series either.
Wasn't keen on the old S3, but the new one seems a lot better.
I should think bonkers power is easily available with not a lot of work.

AL - We were discussing the OLD S3 when you wittered on.
I like the new S3, RS4 and the R8 looks good.
Apart from that, no Audi interests me in the slightest at the moment.

Vauxhall - Top end Astras and Monaros ONLY.
Subarus - WRX and STI + RB320. Like the Forester 2.5XT but it's minging to look at.
Not sure about the S4 - A mate had one and it felt a big "bargy" - He upgraded to the RS4 which was a whole heap better.
It's being supercharged by MTM very soon!

Alive and kicking in my garage: Jag V12 and a Monaro
And the Monaro runs on 95RON - just like Imprezas
As long as there is money in the bank, that will remain the case
I actually fancy building a Cobra replica or GT40, but using a LS7 Corvette engine; Sod originality The LS7 is far superior than a heavy old cast iron Ford.
