Default Something decent for around 1k

Well it looks like I'll be selling the scoob for some quick cash so i'm looking for something half decent for around the £1000 mark. I've had a couple of 205 GTI's before but i don't want another go-kart.
Any idea's what would be a half decent replacement?
My monthly outgoings are one of the reasons i am looking to change so maybe something with low insurance and good MPG.
Thanks

cavalier gsi 16v 2000, awsome cars with luxury, if you lower it 60mm with 17" you will be shocked with the overall performance of the car as they handle really really well, no over/understeer at all, easy and cheap to maintain and very reliable, good mpg, but make sure the rear arches are in good con as it could set you back £250+ to get them done.

Yeah, I used to like these but finding one thats serviceable could be a challenge as they are a minimum of what, 12 years old ?

I would do a search on the autotrader website for < £1000 and in your general area to avoid long drives and wasted drives looking at rubbish, there will always be someone selling something locally thats decent, you just need to keep an open mind until you find something that doesnt offend you too much !

Whenever I have tried to do fast and cheap it has gone wrong, i.e. whenever the money versus bhp thing comes up, just look for the safe bet at a grand if its your daily transport, avoid worn smooth 205's, great little cars but now very old and only viable for the track/day and weekend brigade.

Can be worth dropping in at the local dealers to see whats come in as part ex, but make sure you check them carefully as though cheap private sellers tend to part ex stuff when it has big bills looming.

Pug 406 diesel would be my recomendation at that price, very comfy, cheap and econonical, might even get one with aircon.

Dont forget to be cheeky when you go to see a car, chip a grands worth of car by 200 quid or more, they can only say no, I have sold loads to people who half heartedly bargain, go for the jugular.

Wouldn't a 325 suffer from poor MPG?.

Mine returns about 280miles on under 50litres, if not going too nuts. That's pretty good I reckon

About 220 if you're a hooligan. Haven't done the maths myself as I don't really care

If its more cheap running rather than go kart, then you're into the mirca 1.0 or 106 diesel bracket, unless you do a lot of motorway miles.

If you want a bit of fun, perhaps a 106 1.4, or a fiesta zetec.

If you use the motorway, how about a golf / 306 diesel?

Define half decent

I got a 1999 Pug 406 2.1TD for a grand
134K miles FSH and in excelent condition all round, 4 brand new Michelins and the aircon re-gassd and new disks and pads and bushes all round.
It has climate and 6 CD changer, all electrics and goes well and does 44MPG on a run around 39 in town.

Great torque and handles OK for a biggish car

I have never, ever been a fan fo French cars, this has changed my opinions

How do you find the seats on a long run Paul ?

I had a 1.8LX as a run about and got a bad back after 1 hour driving

i bought me an mr2 just recently for 2 grand, 94 with 120k miles, you might really struggle with just 1 grand for that, but its very very fun, handles like nothing i've driven before and the noise of the engine behind you is something new - definatelly the best 2 grand i've spent so far, and after 3 months of ruthless abuse its still going like a clock.
Also, i have never had so many looks driving in such a low cost car before - a few guys actually told me "thats a nice car you have there mate" - i was like wtf , i rarely get that in my 15k legacy b4 : )

give these guys a call.
Untitled Document
Speak to a guy called Nev. Give him 1000 pounds and he will give you a volvo 340 fitted with a fully working Renault 19 16v engine running approx 160bhp.
I wholeheartedly reccomend it
astraboy.

Try a Mercedes 230TE, great quality and lazy motoring, but I love it
