Default Performance Diesels

If you had the cash which one would you chose and why?

BMW 535d M Sport
or
Audi A6 3.0 TDi TDV (or S-Line) or similar eg. A4

Both have similar power output and do similar MPG.

Looking at the Trader I can see the following:
2005 Audi A6 3.0 TDi Quattro SE with 23, 000 miles for £24, 990
2005 BMW 535D M Sport with 28, 000 miles for £30, 000

That's a £5000 difference. Wonder why?

You'd also think in real world conditions the Audi would be faster due to having the quattro system.

"Performance Diesels" The title cotradicts itself!

BTW you do mean 3.0 TDI and NOT 3.2 TDI correct?

535d is more powerful. I can't remember the exact figures, so you'll have to check. 535d is about 272hp, versus the 233hp from the Audi (This is for the later Audi A6 models, best check this has the higher power engine, that current new cars have.) , plus the BM has more torque too. In a straight line the BM wins every time(155mph and 0-60 in the mid 6's), and should be quicker across country in all but the worst weather.

But the Audi has the better cabin in my opinion, and is a nicer place to spend time in.

You pays your money you take your choice.

Spend your money.....waste your money!

Too expensive, and the residuals are not worth it IMHO!

Yo've clearly never run a powerful diesel then

To the OP

The Beemer is £5k more expensive because it is the far better car (although there may well be spec differences)

The Audi has the higher quality interior, but that's about it.

Drive them both and you'll see what I mean.

I have the a6 3.0 tdi sline if you want info, great car and great mpg, it isnt a rocket 7.5 sec to 60 but it does return 40mpg on a run and averages about 37mpg and you get decent performance... great car though.. Although i must admit i have had a few gremlins with the build quality on the interior and dadh.. little things that I havent experienced before with audis (had 4 before, mainly a4's)

PM if you want more info

I cannot comment on the Audi, but i drove the 535d Sport before i bought an M3 instead..................i only kept the M3 six weeks as it was over-hyped rubbish, and i wish i had bought the 535d.Absolutely storming performance and torque, easily mappable to around 320bhp,plus 30mpg,but it is only available with an auto box(don't know about the Audi),but it suits it very well.

I would say audi, IMHO they are built better than the modern BMWs.. Also having owned several BM's (3 and 5 series), I dont like the stigma you get with having one..

just my opinion

I drive 530d's at work ..... and I would have one of those - let alone a 535d ! I would love a 535d ..... it must be a great car for a diesel. The 530d feels nice and pokey at 7 secs to 60. The 535d must feel quite quick indeed.
