Fast car for under a grand?
I'm thinking about getting myself a cheap car for under a grand to use on trackdays (and maybe occasional road use when my other car's garaged).
Any recomendations? Ideally it will be reasonably quick to start with and easily tunable. An older Jap turbo would be ideal, but I cant think of anything that might be near that price.
Cheers.

old and turbo normally wont be reliable though charade gtti is quite quick and have strong engines and are turbod but they are many tired ones around they rust alot so be aware....an oldworkmate has covered 170k miles on his original turbo and he boots it straight from cold.
if i were you an mx5 would be good thats what i have its 17 year old and handles amazing and cost me 500 notes and all it needed for its mot was a rear shocker thats it and still hasnt and doesnt need welded.
ok they seem a bit girly but once you have a shot driving one you soon realise that its anything but everything feels right from handling to the slick gear change which is rifle bolt like.other than that a gtturbo they seem insanely quick but not very good reliability wise.
for a grand you wont be able to get what you want so some compromises must be made thats why i recomend the mx5.
i remember i had the roof down one night coming home from work and a chav comes screaming up behind me in his corsa i then drive quickly onto a roundabout then hearing a funny noise i realised it was the corsa understeering behind me lol

I had a grand to buy a track car with and considered something turbo, but I wanted something that would be cheap to maintain and run.
I narrowed my choices down to a mk2 Golf GTI 8v or a mk2 Honda CRX 1.6 16v. Both can be modified cheaply and parts are still plentiful.
As I already have a Golf (albeit a mk4) I decided on the CRX!
