Question 1997 VW Passat 1.9tdi

OK here goes (again)
Been offered on of these, old shape 90k miles for a grand

It is the estate model with A/C, manual, alloys, looks tidy from the pictures.

It is 60 miles from me so keen to find out a bit before i spend all of Saturday on a wild goose chase. I do not expect it to set the world on fire just be a good, reliable daily driver

Which BHP engine is this model likely to have?, i know there are a lot of variations on this engine
What are they like to run/own?
What sort of MPG to expect?
Any known faults to look out for?

Ta

Does it have to be a big estate? if so what about a Mondeo 1.8lx petrol - mustn't be far behind the diesel in terms of economy - or get yourself a MK3 Golf TDi - the 90bhp versions are not that bad once moving because they are lighter than the equivalent Passat.

Ive got a 97 mk 1 toledo TDi (facelift) 9obhp..

huge boot, seats 4 adults in comfort, and happily cruises at 70 for hours..

and it gets 500+ miles to a tank averages between 50-60mpg

its a bit rough round the edges, but it does the job

Dont bet on it, mine averages 24-25 mpg. Admittedly most trips are short and in town though. Should manage low-mid 30s on runs.

How reliable are they when they've covered 100k or so?

Test drove a 130 pdi estate today - and i have to say they were right about the dull drive .. - i dont think all the creture comforts could make up for it..
