After years of thinking about it, I am now in a position to enter the world of 911 ownership. Having researched the pro's and con's of all variants, I feel the 993 (last of the air-cooled models) ticks all the right boxes. We currently have an Audi A4 1.9Tdi Avant Sport as the family vehicle which I will continue to use when the weather is bad or a long journey presents itself.
My wifes Fiesta will be sold! YEEEESSSSSS!
Therefore, I predict mileage on the Porsche will be circa 6k per annum. It will be tucked up in my heated garage whilst not in use.

I would be interested to hear ownership experiences/nightmares and also opinion on the car below which i'm very tempted by.

Specialist cars certainly deal in the top end of the market, and I'd guess that car to be worth good money. I'd suggest a 993 RS spec car should include more than just a body kit though.

Budget 2k a year to run.

 

The only thing I'd question on that particular car, is why it's already had 6 owners in 11 years?
I thought most Porsches were kept by their owners for longer than your every day cars would be, as most (high spec specialist car like the RS's) are used mostly as weekend cars.

Nice looking motor though. Have thought getting a 911 (both 993 & 996) myself. Only top spec 993's (RS, Turbo's) would be the ones I'd consider.

 

mate went form a scoob to a 911 (new one) and it was the biggest disapointment hes had, ended up being back in a scoob.

 

I love the 993's. My old boss used to have a regualr Carrera 2 - superb car, handled great, sounded fantastic.

I have read about the one they run in the Evo mag, that chap said it cost more to run than he thought, but still not that bad.

The 993 probably is the last true 911 before Porsche got too carried away bowing to the knees of city dwelling desk enthusiats with making them too heavy and turning it into a easy to live with Grand Tourer.

Later 911s are just a rear engined 928 imho, good, but if I wanted a car that drove like a 928, I would have bought a 928 in the first place

The 993 is easier to live with than the older cars, it has a better interior layout and few more creature comforts like the dreaded power steering (why? ), but some people want that (unlike me ) so to them its a boon.

Personally I'd go for an older model (more raw to drive) or a Carerra RS, or a GT2 at a push (car in the ad is NOT a RS - just has the bodykit ).

Sort of see where Shark Man is coming from (I don't think that history will look that kindly on the bog standard 996s (in the context of the entire 911 range that is)), but it is a little unfair - they did make some crackers (996 GT3, GT2, GT3 RS spring to mind - I don't these were 'bowing to the knees of city dwelling desk enthusiasts').

Some of the changes were forced onto Porsche aswell (such as the change to water cooling, which was essential for the newer multi valve engines) and I don't think anyone would describe the interior of a 993 as masterpiece of design from an asthetic or ergonomic perspective - it does look very dated compared to modern cars.

Having driven the latest 997 C4S I would say that Porsche are very firmly back on track - it's a beautiful car to drive and judging by the reviews it has had and the new GT3 and GT3 RS, I don't think Porsche has forgotten its heritage.

 

Agreed, aside from the new 997 gt3, its 993 all the way for me. Having said that I'm actually on the look out for a 968 cs at the moment.

 

The one I'd like (Turbo, GT3 aside) is the 996 C4S. In either Black, dark Blue, or Silver. Sports seats prefered. Black leather interior.

Prices are still to high to even consider buying one.

Is it just me, or do alot of Porsche buyers (mostly 996) have awfull taste in colour choices. Some of the interior colours around are just Vomit inducing.

 

Whilst the interior does look a bit dated, the quality of the materials used on older porsches are way better than newer cars. Be interesting to compare an early boxster and 996 against a car twice its age.

Shark man I dont think the guy is looking at spending 60k for 993rs or over 100k on a 993 GT2.

 

Davy - how come the 993rs is still so expensive?

Simple supply and demand, there are just not many about, Unlike the GT3 and GT3RS of the 996 and 997.

The 964RS and 993RS were never built in such numbers and fewer remain!

As has been said, the build quality and materials are much better on the 993 variant compared with the newer 996. The interior of the 993 does look dated but is very functional. I haven't been in the new 997 yet but from reading reviews, it appears that they have listened and improved things.

I would love one of the much sought after rarer Porsche models but have a budget of only £30k max. This is why I arrived at looking for a good 993 rather than an early 996.

Time to get out there and look at a few I suppose. The Specialist Cars 993 RS bodykitted car is in Manchester which is not exactly local to me, i'm in Leics. Might take the wife shopping at the Arndale Centre and pop off to take a look.

Alternatively, anyone in Manchester care to go and take a look at said car for me? Would save me the trip if it's ropey.

Love the cars - owned two of them. First was a Carrera 4, with about 80,000 miles on it and was a top quality car in a very rare grey colour that looked great (but I owned it while in Aus).

Second was in the UK, a 97 Targa, which while a lovely car with only 24k miles on it (which I wanted to keep low so bought a Rover 214 as a daily drive), it was noticeable that the Targa was built on the convertible chassis and not the standard car as it flexed more than it should.

Plenty of good forums, lots of great info and a sound to die for. Nothing beats turning that key in the dash, watching the levels go up, as does the noise, and listening to the beat behind you. Awesome.

Meant to say - running costs were great. Both used less fuel than my WRX PPP, servicing was fine and respectable (even in Surrey), parts OK and did not really need much (rear wishbones I think), and insurance was cheaper than the WRX as well with exactly the same circumstances. But WRX was £20k, and the Targa cost £37k. Then again, I sold the Targa 2 years later and lost £1,500 in that time on the resale value. I sold the WRX after 1.5 years and lost nearly £8k...

You are maybe thinking of Specialist Cars of Malton? Heard lots of good stuff about them - and they also happen to have a few nice 993's in.

specialist cars of malton do seem to price their cars to the upper end of the scale. Saying that if the prep and warranty are top draw then probably worth it, both essential in porker land.
