Fault with Honda
Bit of a strange one, the gears will get in fine when the engine is not turn over, but once I started the engine the gears will not go in at all.
Can anyone shread any lights on this? I'm thinking its something to do with the hydrulic (sp?) pump but i'm no mechanic.
ps the clutch pedal didn't feel right when i drove it last night, seems to be pretty sloppy when I pressed it down, but the gears went in fine.

sounds like hydraulics - clutch cylinder, maybe a seal has gone or you have air in the line. Pretty sure all Hondas realy on fluid operation on the clutch not a cable.
It it has just come on like you describe and you can engage gears whilst stationary with the engine off then i would sumise a pressure problem and a blown seal on piston in the cylinder.
Not serious or expensive, new cylinder or recon the old one.

Paul that could be it, i know the gearbox and clutch are fine since it'll engage gear fine with the engine off, just happen at a bad time of year where every garage are shut till next wed, don't really want to but i think the mk2 golf have to come out of herbenation.

Being able to engage gears with the engine off gives you no indication whatsoever as to the condition of the clutch.
If there is nothing parked in front or behind your car, try putting it in first or reversewith the clutch depressed, and turn it over. If it lurches forwards or backwards, it means the clutch is still engaged and you've probably got a fluid leak in your actuator circuit.
Be ready to turn the ignition off though, because if/when it starts, you'll be off up the road with no way of disengaging drive
