Thumbs up fun car for £2k ???????????????

thinking of getting a replacement for my trusty old zx turbo diesel that I use for work, 10 mile each way.

now that petrol is 8p a litre cheaper than diesel, it would be a good time to change,

list of possible cars to look out for

Honda crx rare for decent rust free one
Golf gti mk2 16v had one a few years ago and it was excellent
106 rallye had a mint one last year, shouldnt of sold it
106 gti a bit more refined than rallye, not been in one
mx5 might be good fun, not been in one before
cuppacino a bit girly maybe, and a tiny engine ???

I would love a classic ford of some desription, but being completely useless with a spanner will only bugger me up, so it needs to be reliable,

any one got any more ideas

M8 i have an mx-5 its a 91 plate not really any service history picked it up for 500notes put it in for an mot after checking the car over myself and it only failed on 1 rear shocker which i spotted myself.no rust on it.
its also the exact same acceleration as my m8's saxo vtr mine is an early 1.6 114bhp model other 1.6 models can be 90bhp.

its not the fastest car ive had but its definetly one of the most rewarding to drive the handling is brilliant the gearchange is brilliant and birds like them haha.it does feel like an old car lots of noise when on the motorway 3000rpm @6o mph.
i admit i was one of them people who said their hairdressers cars but they dont drive like one have a shot.you wont regret it.
mines kept off the road in the winter and if you get an old one like mineyou can keep the diesel and insure the mx-5 under classis car insurance for the summer you cant go wrong with japenese reliability and you will get a good resale value.

go for it!!!

p.s. ive looked at other cars such as the crx i like them their light and powerful but just wouldnt pay 2.5-3.k for a good un as their too old now theyve held onto their value too much you could also look out for the old old civic about an88 89 90 91 with the bonnet buldge that has the crx engine but their very rare but should be cheaper than the crx...i had a r5 gtturbo raider it was minted sold it for 1700 notes 4 years ago now you cant pick 1 like that up for under 3k now which is rediculous would never pay that for a car that has 16 years wear and tear.

Honda : 1.6i-VT i-16 VTEC EE9 old civic wolf in sheeps clothing think of the bhp/ton

Honda : Bye Bye VTI!! sold but would love this 4x4 1.8 turbo japanese reliability...damn that car looks so good i want it!!!

Honda : 1991 Honda CRX VT get a grip 3k 165k miles for a rusty crx

Mazda : mazda familia gt-x/r excellent 1k 4x4 1.8 turbo

I do like 205's, I think I'll add them to the list,

one thing though is that I enjoy cleaning/polishing cars, so ideally I would want something that is very clean to start with, so I can keep it that way

Mk1 golf gti, I really like these aswell, but they are a bit old now for someone like me to use as an everyday car for work

£500 for a mx5, sounds like a bargain there, cant go wrong at that price.
Theres a nice white crx on ebay at the mo, on a j plate, I'll dig out the ad,
cant see it going for under 2k though

eBay.co.uk: 1991 HONDA CIVIC CRX VTEC WHITE (item 320064711318 end time 30-Dec-06 13:51:18 GMT)

over 2k with 6 days to go, would like one of these but it would be tricky getting one for around my budget

aye it was a bargain it needed a new rear plastic window and a clutch which i sorted out within the week.....

i like the old civic with 150 bhp engines mental compared to the overweight things on the road now.

check out those mazda 323 turbo's whoooo i want one

i always buy old cars as i never bother washing them......but religously service them you cant polish a turd lol

that first mazda does look very nice, I wonder how often they come up for sale, I'll definately keep my eye out for them,

I wouldnt mind a starlet turbo, but these also go for silly money

was messing around on carfolio.com and typed in the audi s3 it said it had 137bhp per ton then take away 4wd transmision losses and it really isnt that fast and costs over 10k.

typed in the old civic it has 146bhp per ton and has fwd losses so not a s much and costs under 2k and its a honda it will not break when you thrash it....i know which i'll pick and put the rest down for a deposit for a house lol

heres the link for the mx-5 its called a miata the name for the us market eunos was for the japanese market it has 120 bhp per ton for a 1.6 no bad ma man get 1. 1989 Mazda MX-5 Miata specifications - Carfolio.com automobile specifications database

Impreza? Plenty of classics around for banger money now - and they tend to last quite well. I guess you'd have to be willing to put up with the chavtastic image and shocking fuel consumption tho!

Theres got to be something wrong with that scooby, are you driving with 3 wheels? or maybe bike tyres?!

But the best car for under 2k, is WITHOUT a doubt, rover 220 turbo coupe -

Bought one as a temporary car for £1,100 with 86k miles on it. Best move iv made in my life, 200 bhp, 0-60 6.5, easy to mess around with and uv lost no money if you blow it up!

Bonus!

i agree , 220 turbo is a great little car if u dont mind the rattles , will easily stay with a uk scoob or wrx wagon in a straight line ......... alternative is 620 ti ....... same engine , bigger car and better chassis , watch the pistons on them though there made of chocolate

my justification was that the 306 handles like a go kart. simple MUCH more fun than my Scoobs were (although not in accelleration).... I had 2 modded uk Scoobs - great they were , but.....

Let's not forget that the Scoob is a **** car that just so happens to have a good(ish) engine and lots of grip (in the right circumstances!). but it understeers like a sod. Granted the 306 aint exactly the best car, but it is a great cheap fun car.

Don't get me wrong, I loved my 2 Scooby rust-buckets (affectionate term, as they were relatively new ones, albeit Classics), but they have their faults too.

Rust buckets? Ive got to be honest I dont think Ive seen any rusty impreza's! My mate has a really old '93 import WRX which I'd expect to be in the scapper by now, but its still rust free surprisingly (AFAIK anyway)!

220 turbo is a great car for straight line fun and shocks a few people. Had mine for three years and loved it. Power was hard to get down in 1st and 2nd and taking corners at speed was a little frightening................agree did out run standard UK Subaru's (which is what I ended up trading it against)

Still hanker for a 205 especially knowing the good ones will hardly lose any money (if at all).

Yep, dont go for outright speed at that money, go for the best Golf GTI you can get your hands on, 8 or 16 valve, they both have their merits. Careful as they do rust.

are you trying to say its a certain type of people who drive starlets hahaha

i would like a starlet turbo but theres no chance iam paying a few grand for something thats been bought for say 1khas lead a previous life in another country for most of its life and comes with documents that are written in japanese and says "guranteed history or mileage" who exactly gurantees it??????? exactly how do you gurantee something like that its bull sh** then some jap importer wants 4-5k for it aye right watch me!!! also do you need to run them on super ans octane booster cant be f***ed with that.

remember fun cars dont have to be fast just give the impression that their fast when driving them and be a hoot to drive
