I agree with delcbr, get an early MX5 - well a Eunos.
I've got a '93 S-spec, 114bhp 1.6 which revs it's nuts off, factory LSD, factory Bilsteins.
It is such a laugh to drive. Mine gets used more than the Scoob and it never, ever gives any trouble.
13 year old car and the only thing ever to break is one of the keys!

Charade GTti every time. 2K should get you a decent car and allow enough budget for a decent exhaust and downpipe, induction kit and if you wanted to and FCD and bleed valve and hello 150bhp which gives you Impreza type midrange grunt.

I would go along with the MX5 but it has no back seats... that's a prob for a lot of people with kids.
I have not had a scooby yet so am surprised to hear that the handling is not that great, I would have thought they would have understeered less than a front wheel drive car.
