Default rover 214 failed mot emission test

had my car fail on the emissions the other day
and was told it might be the oxygen sensor
so i thought i would post the results to see if any body knows better

IDLE TEST
CO% 0.209 pass

FAST IDLE TEST
CO% 0.587 fail
HC ppm 59 pass
LAMBDA 1.032 pass

SECOND FAST IDLE TEST
CO% 1.094 fail
HC ppm 255 fail
LAMBDA 1.078 pass

what would be the cause of this
dont want to chuck money at the car for the simple reason it aint worth it
and im selling it soon anyway

at 50 notes for a halfords generic lambda, what have you got to loose??

and bung in a good dose of redex, change, plugs, oil & filters, and get it nice and hot before the retest

There is a trick to getting a k-series though the MOT, it needs a knowledgeable tester.

First: thrash the living daylights out of it immediately prior to the emissions test, the engine has to be really hot.

Then carry out the extended emissions test immediately after thrashing, and bring the fast idle revs up very GRADUALLY to the target rpm band. The last bit is crucial it has to have the revs brought up very very gradually.

Don't ask why this works, but it does, and obviously you need a tester who does alot of Rovers, so they know the score and what to do.

Could be the cat is knackered (if it has one). As suggested getting it really hot is your best bet.
