Question The worst 'next car' choice you've made...

I'll kick off..

Buying an R32 GTR .... 2 days later chasing an E46 M3....spinning a bearing and blowing the engine up.. causing a 5k bill.... priceless.

That would be on my top of the 'worst error's of judgement' from my motoring history...

Saxo VTS to Ford Mondeo ST24. I did like the mondy, was an excellent car to drive, but I should have been a little more sensible and waited a while longer to get an Impreza, as I lost a fair whack when selling the Mondy six months later.

And me. I thought the 172 was a bit more grown up. Not such a bad choice imo.

About 11 years ago bought a Seirra 4x4 Turbo Technics (single turbo) with my Uni grant cash. I was very naive and bought a dog, learned the hard way.

12 months later engine went bang and I had no cash to replace.. sold for 200 pounds (paid 2000) with a big hole in the engine block .

My first erm *performance* car Well I guess it kinda was then

Nice learning curve though

Took a few bob to make the Scoob much better than the GTi-6, but after a few bob spent all was well with the world!

Mint Peugeot 106 Xsi M-Reg (1yr old), to a 'family friendly' L-Reg Mondeo 2.0 Ghia.

Before dying of boredom, part-exed it for a Golf GTi 8v 6 months later losing about 3k

Oh, and the Golf was a bit of a lemon too. Been a bit more sensible since!

SOld my two Fiat Strada Abarth 130TC for a vast £400 for the both and bought a Rover 220GTi for 9K for reliability issues as the Fiats were off the road for ages awaiting parts from the Abarth factors for months.

3 engine rebuilds and 13 alternators plus a host of problems and in a year is cost me over £4. What a piece of crap. Poorly designed in places to the point of being comical.

The Fiats were better in every respect apart from rust and worth far more than the Rover would be now

I bought the wife [then girlfriend] a Clio 1.2 16 volt. PCP jobbies, £199 deposit, £199 a month. Seemed a good deal. Ran the troublesome heap of **** for 6 months before getting rid. I was in negative equity by £3k. Just paid it off and lived with it!

Should have kept it in hindsight, as it wasn't a lot of money to find each month and running costs were mega cheap.....

ah well, guess you live and learn.

Going from an old school Escort RS2000 to an Orion Ghia , needless to say the Orion only lasted a few weeks.

Deciding to buy an Impreza and keep it for only 6 months, to get the "speed thing out of my system". That was nearly 5 years ago and I've still not sold it

I have sensibly bought a diesel as a runaround now though...

Bought a Rover 600TI, 2 months later changed my job so I was now doing 20,000+ miles a year.
The rover also needed £500 work doing so I swapped it for an economical Peugeot 306 TD, bought from a Volvo dealer.
It came with 1 year warranty and I think I spent more time in varies Volvo courtesy cars.
Eventually after 9 months the engine went pop and they installed a new one, things got a lot better after this but I took no chances and sold it as soon as the warranty ran out.
I wrote a letter to Volvo and told them what I thought of they used cars and the service I got, with good results.

I sometimes wonder how loaded I would be now, had I not sold the Citroen ZX TD I had about 10 years ago, and continued to use it. I still see M reg versions going about, so it'd probably have survived... and I'd never have had to buy and run a Celica, Impreza, Rover and now vRS Skoda.

Hmm...

SOld a perfectly good Y reg Mondeo 1.8 LX (bought for peanuts of a mate) and sold it to get a Fiat Coupe Turbo which was a dog, sold that cheap due to its issues and bought a Rover BRM and the Headgasket went pop on that within 2 months rendering it scrap, bought a sensible Saab 9-3 and that has been a lot better and not that much slower (at least in a straight line).

The car troubles put a lot of strain on my relationship with the missus (well her relationship with me) as we didnt have a lot of money and I managed to lose about two grand despite being well up on the Mondeo when I sold it.

Put a lot of strain on me as well, spending seven grand on a car (Fiat) having waited years to get a proper performance car and for it to turn to rat****, checking the oil every day and seeing it drop by a litre in a couple of days, was tempted to torch the f*cker, used to make me feel physically sick, I still owe the **** of a dealer one for the way I was treated.
