Default 205 GTI

Anything to look out for?

I have done a search and there are 100s of threads - I just need to know the basics on these cars (ok with checking but need specifics for the 1.9 GTI).

Cheers BTK.

they don't wear well if abused, manifolds crack, air flow meters go wrong causing them to 'hunt' on idle, sunroofs leak but easy to fix if you know how and check the rear beam for wear (squeaks and groans) and the nipples *snigger* break off the calipers making them difficult to bleed.

I would ignore mileage and look for condition, I have had three and the lowest mileage one had lived a hard life and was the worse of the bunch, yet the high mileage one was looked after by me and previous owners and a fantastic car.

Check for evidence of a cambelt change every 48k - not included in service schedule, but essential

But an 8v wouldn't have 200bhp and 155 ft/lbs now would it

I should add, they are only a money pit if you replace every component like I have (SBC suspension sat down stairs ready to go on)

It's all about the curve not the peak My 8v would give such a spec mi16 a run for it's money, mainly because my peak starts at 3k and keeps going until the redline, whereas the power for the above spec probably wont arrive until 4.5/5k ??

Great, great motors.

But all good things come to an end. So mine's on Pistonheads.

Totally lost interest in cars. Don't know why. Might go see the doctor. Maybe I've been cured of the disease?

I'll vouch for Olly's motor It's the one to buy if your looking for one

The only thing wrong with it is he won't sell it to me Just because MrsD told him she'd cut his ***** off

And it has the added bonus of being in a non-ghey colour too

BTW, morning DW, SJ, didn't see you there

Bugger off you big bum stuffers

You are correct Sean and Dave, power is nothing without control.

We had a 205 run out the other week, me with 200bhp and std suspension brakes, 1 GTI-6 with 180bhp Koni's and LSD, plus big brakes, and a 140bhp 8V also with suspension/brakes and LSD.

I couldn't keep up with them at all, and couldn't hit the higher speeds due to torque steer/knacked suspension. Hence just spending £600 on all new front suspension, replacing everything.

Just LSD and brakes to do now, and thats EVERYTHING replaced on the car, tipping the scales at £7500

That doesn't include all the tools, consumables, tax/insurance etc as well as i'd need them whatever car I had

It's still worth at least £4,500 though, so not too bad depreciation in 3 years, and its fast and fun

I love my little 205..

Needed to raise some cash so sold the Scoob and got a 205 Mi16 on twin Weber 45's. Also has different cams, head work, amongst lots of other bits...

Running somewhere between 200-220 and it fapping great fun..

No interior and a nice roll cage helps .

(It also has Bilstein & uprated springs, ARBs and torsion bars, bigger brakes and uprated clutch. So plenty of things to rein in the power).

You had it on a rolling road?

I would think 180bhp is more likely with carbs.

Previous onwer had it on the rroad and had 195bhp @ 5500 and he got them to ease off well before rev limiter. Power prob peaks around 7000 so would like to get it on again when i get the chance.

The spec sheet provided by the car builders estimates 230bhp. It has been balanced, peugeot 'road rally' cams, baffled sump, high output oil filter, twin weber 45's, gas flowed/re-worked head, uprated exhaust and intake manifold and a pug group N exhaust (which cracked last week so am looking for a replacement).

The car has only covered 9500 miles since it was built.

I'm not dismissing what you said as I dont know all that much - but can twin 45's fuel 230 bhp? I thought you'd be looking at 48's atleast.

I would have thought so, it's all down to what size chokes he's running.
