Odd handling on a brand spanker
Hi,
I've got a brand new Golf GT TDi and am experiencing something I've not noticed with the previous car (I rejected the previous one!).
Whilst doing motorway speed, if you try to change direction the back end feels like its lagging behind a little.
The only difference between the two cars is that the first car had Bridgestone RE050's and this one had Pirelli P-Zeros. The Bridgestone did feel more planted compare to the PZ's.
Is it the tyres that can cause this or something else?

tyre pressures out by 1psi if that on one side but don't thing that would be enough to cause the problem.
probably is me. Amazing how two same cars (bar tyres) can drive so different

i had a problem just like this on a previous car many yeats ago (MR2) and it was because the rear tyres were a different type to the front. On this car they are the same type all round. Very weird.

No that sounds like the P Zero's at work. I have P Zero Nero's on my Fabia vRS, and first of all the tail felt very skittish. Once they bed in, as they do need a few miles on them to work, they are fine. That tail movement is still there, but you learn to use it. Its a little unnerving at first, as you feel like the car is going to oversteer, but once to get used to feel, you can adjust your line beautifully in corners. Give yourself time to learn what they can do.

I had something similar with my Fabia vRS - it was alarming how it rolled around at high speed. Some -25 eibachs within 500 miles of ownership soon sorted that problem out!

But if it's that new then just keep the tyres at the correct pressure, get the wheel alignment checked at the first service and wait until a few thousand miles before changing things. The the tyres will be part worn and introduce more variables into the equation ....

thanks for the feedback. They do appear to grip incredibly well and are quieter at higher speeds. It is a strange sensation, feels like the rear is going to swing round and take over - like driving with a trailer attached kind of sensation.
The tread depth is massive on these tyres, I guess that could contribute to the wallow nature of the handling.
When I fitted Avon ZZR's to my scoob just before departing with her they felt similiar.

I can do, not sure if the VW dealers are equipped with 4 wheel alignment checking facilities. Be interesting trying to persuade them that I think theres a problem, they may think i'm paranoid?
If I can get it done for free, part of warranty I will - certainly not paying for it since it's been like that from the off.
Ohh, forgot to mention, when i picked the car up the wheel was offset to the right slightly. I took it back and they duly straighened it up for me. Could they have shafted something by adjusted the wheel alignment?

... at 70mph and above turning the wheel right generates the effect moreso than turning left thats for sure.
One motorway junction near me has the yellow coloured grip surface half way round the bend (presumably to reduce accidents). You can really feel the car jolt when it transfers from one surface to the other - moreso than the last car.
I can just tell something is different.
I'll ring them up tomorrow and book it in for a check - I'm usually right when i have a hunch on something.
I should stick to motorbike, at least I can set them up without depending on a garage
Thanks

Pirelli P-zero what? There are different P-zero tyres:-
PZero System
PZero Nero
PZero Rosso
PZero Corsa System
A quick check shows they are all assymetric. Also check tread patterns, Assimetrico or Direzionale.
Do you have the same tyres all round? All the same tread patterns? All fitted for the correct rotation? Not saying this is what's causing the problem, but it's got to be worth double checking.

PZero Rosso is fitted to the correct and they appear to be the correct way around.
got the car back today - they said the offside drivers wheel was on the maximum camber setting but within manufacturers specification. They adjusted it to bring it more central.
It seems to be better now.
