Default Autotrader

Is it me or has autotrader got expensive? Been trying to find a little run around for anything between £500 and £1500 to fill the gap before my new car arrives. Need something that will be easy to shift, like a first time buyer's car with reasonable miles.

Everything I come across must be 3-400 over parkers guide prices and i know if I have to px it then dealers will knock it more.

Seen a nice 306 LX 1.9 TD on a V plate with 114k for £1600 but thats about the closest I can get in terms of value.

Trouble is with ebay if you bid on a car you have to wait till your bid has won the auction or someone outbids you before looking at something else. The classifieds seem to be riddled with expensive (relatively) stuff.

Been looking at the locals ads but not much choice unfortunately.

parkers guide is a load of rubbish imo, they just make prices up! Plenty of places selling cars for a couple of hundred quid, just buy one thats got enough mot on it to last you till you get your new car then just scrap it!

Should be able to get a 98/99 Ka on autotrader, maybe something newer on Ebay. Will be a piece of **** selling on. I've bought and sold 2 of them for my g/f. Sold both within a couple of days.

Get one with plenty of MOT. Not much goes wrong with these cars.

Yep around this price. Look on completed Ebay auctions to see what they go for. I usually buy on Ebay and sell in the Autotrader or the local paper.

Both Ka's sold to recently passed drivers and they even turned up with their parents. Must be the car of choice for new drivers. Even made £300 profit on the last one after 3 months of driving it about!

KAs get through lower suspension arms quicker than anything. My GFs previous one had 4 in less than 3 years. She now has a 51 plate and that had to have one last MOT... I wouldn't buy another cheap Ford...
The Polo she has as a first car went on for yonks...

At this price level you would be better going to auction and looking for trade in cars offloaded by dealers.

Had a moochy down there last week but it was full of 2k-5k cars, and I don't want or need to spend that much. The crap that went through at £500 was exactly that, crap!!

Working in London for the next month so not easy to get back for a 6pm auction either.

I've been to the bedford BCA auctions several times and must say I'm very unimpressed. There will be a buyers fee on any purchase and you don't get much info about the car you bid on, certainly no tax. A good Ebay advert and a competant seller should divulge much more information. IMHO I'd pick Ebay over a physical auction anyday.

Fair points from both of you about auctions. If you don't have the time or know what you're doing then it's easy to buy a drossy car.

Unlike ebay though you can see the car in the flesh and even watch it being started and driven if you know the form. Most of the drivers will operate the major controls for you, tell you how high the clutch is and if it drives 'straight'.
All far more valuable than some lies on ebay to me.

I bought a mint P reg Legacy auto saloon for a friend of mine at a BCA auction for near banger money and it's been a great car for him. Like I say know what you're doing and it's easy for a private buyer.

On Ebay, you can pull out if the item isnt as described when you go to pick it up.

I test drive every car I win on Ebay before I hand over the money. You get a cheap history check and a week's free insurance too if you win. Haven't bought a lemon out of the 8/9 I've bought.
