Default Ford Fiesta heating problem????????

My wifes mk5 Fiesta has a strange habbit of pumping hot air into the car even when the temperature dial is set to cold. The very strange thing is that it doesnt do this all the time..... only when the engine revs over 3000rpm.

So on a long motorway trip you have to have the windows open as the cabin turns into a mobile sauna.

Any ideas what needs fixing?

Its a Fiesta Ghia 1.25 - 51 reg 5 door

I think the mixer valve doodah thing goes knackered, I think it's quite common, not had it myself but I'm sure it's cropped up here before

There is an electronic valve behind the engine in the 2 coolant pipes that pass through the bulkhead to the heater matrix (it's under the bonnet just behind that plastic bulkhead thing they fit). This controls the flow through the matrix and they are a common fault.

I can't remember how easy they are to fit (never fitted one but know other people who have). It's only got 4 pipes (jubilee clips) and an electrical plug so I can't see it being too difficult. The only akward bit is probably down to the fact it's under the scuttle panel below the wiper linkage.

When you've changed it the cooling system will need bleeding. Basiclly fill it with coolant, start the engine and leave to get warm with the header tank cap off until the cooling fans kick in then refit the header tank cap. While it is warming up you will need to keep an eye on the coolant level as it will drop down slightly as all the air pockets come out of the system. Chances are you won't lose too much coolant to start with.

They're a piece of pi$$ to fit and are well worth cleaning out prior to replacing.
Mine was totally cold all the time, cleaned it and working perfectly for the last 3 months (lots of ****e came out so I flushed the system at the same time.......however, due to the location, I bet you could do this without losing much coolant or indeed needing to bleed the system...worth a try)

Hi there

I had the same problem on my KA (Same heater valve as fiesta) the solonoid faled so hot air was pumping out all the time, very easy to fit just be careful not to brake the plastic bits that the pipes slide over they are very brittle. you wont need to bleed the system as the valve is at the top of the bay but have a small pot handy as you will lose a bit of water. should take 20 mins max to fit.

good luck
Mike
