MAF sensor.......

Get a diagnostic check done on the car to confirm, but that's my guess.

I dont know about the later golfs but the idle valves on the mk2s were a little dodgy and benifited from being cleaned every now and then which was easy enough.
Mine old mk2 used to cut out sometimes which turned out to be the alternater on the way out and eventually led to the car not starting at all.

Hello mate - there was a recent (ish) thread re mark III Golf GTIs cutting out - several common faults suggetsed were: Fuel pump relay or a dry joint somewhere. For my mum's car it turned out to be the latter - apparantly a very common fault with cars of about that age (my Mum's car is an R reg too - but a mark III 8v Golf GTI).

Hope that helps!

p.s. didn't show up on a diagnostic - mechanic had ruled pretty much everything else out so had to check about 50 wires before he found the one where the solder joint had cracked.
