Default mitsi lancer evo

I've been tempted by one of these fq320 2 years old etc and have always thought no.... based on the 4k service intervals. The reality is that I do probably 10k or less a year and my current M3 costs a small fortune anyway in servicing (the last one was 1100 quid). What are peoples experiences on these re real running costs, desirability and reliability? I would be looking for a standard car so mega tuning options not on the agenda.

We've got a 03 FQ300, and whilst servicing can be a bit of a pain other running costs aren't too bad - depends how fast you drive!

Reliability should not be an issue, we've had rock solid reliability.

Definitely get it I say.

I have a JDM evo VIII they run about 300bhp. I don't do a high mileage so 1 service a year does me. I take it to AMS in arnside cumbria, excellent team, excellent servicing at an affordable price. 'A' service inc ayc comes in at £142 inc vat. Fuel consumption probably get around 24-25 normal driving, dropping to high teens with a bit of spirited driving in there!!!

I have an FQ320, and servicing and petrol are the main costs. Servicing minimum twice a year (6 months/4500 miles), a relatively big service will be £300+, with the basic one being £175 ish (from a main dealer). Fuel is stupid. I get 140-160 miles to £50 Optimax/Vpower, so you spend half your time in a petrol station.

Reliabilty is spot on....it hasn't missed a beat (yet...cross fingers).

The way I would sum it up....if you can justify one, get it!

fuel........I regulary get 24-25 knocking about town!

service 4500mls @ mitsi £190.00 inc vat.

insurance £679.00 elephant.co.uk.

tyres you'd have to be doing a trackday a week for them only to last 5k miles.

I have had two Evo's and they cost me no more to run than the 330i I had apart from insurance. And certainly no more than the two scoobs I had prior to the evo's

Blimey, time to change insurers! Ours is £450 this year.

Service issue could be looked at, we missed a 4500 service and just had a 9000 one done. Service guy (main dealer), just stamped the book for both services and said "well 4500 is just a fluid change"! Having had a scoob before the evo and it had a full main dealer service history I am less and less convinced that a main dealer service history (especially every 4500 miles) is worth it.

I agree Matt. Personaly I think a good specialist history is worth just as much, and it's cheaper.IMHO of course.

I get similar economy to the M3 - both average about 23mpg in mixed use, but the IX with MIVEC does help, as does the tall 6 speed gearing. The only problem with the Evo has been the alarm which as replaced under warranty. The tyre wear seems similar to the M3 but more symmetrical. Insurance for me with modifcations is the same as the M3 was standard. Depreciation in the first year of an Evo is steep, but the M3 carried on at about £900 a month even when 18 months old!

Yes, all gone misty

Typically an FQ340 will lose £10K in the first year I gather. I bought privately at £8k off list at six months old 4000 miles and about £2k of extras, £1k of which I sold (18s, carbon galore, EVC5 etc), making the net cost only about £1k more than a new JDM import. So this bargain offset some of the M3's depreciation, which was savage even thought I bought an excellent example with the right colour and spec and then held on for a sale price that was £3K above the first offer I got. Cars are a good way to lose money when you're paying £30-40K unless you buy old Pork I think, and even then you can get easily bitten.

Thanks for this detailed info - however I always factor in depreciation when looking at costs. Many people say that Evos suffer bad depreciation, but it's all about when you buy and sell. Roughly speaking, a 3 year old Evo is about 15k and a six year old Evo is 10.5k, with 3 years extra mileage on. That's 1.5k a year, the same as a 3 year old Vauxhall or Ford whatever. The bottom line is that limited edition rally reps are one of the safer places to put your 'car money' - it's all about supply and demand. As cars get stolen and written off the supply decreases yet secondhand these cars are still desireable. Look at Escort Cosworth and Integrale prices and you'll see. Buy any car that's more than 60% of new list price and you'll be owning a depreciation timebomb.

Boring isn't it, but that's how I can put a nicer car on my drive than my neighbour's, for the same pence per mile.
