Default Golf GTi 8v Mk 3 Cutting out

My mates son recently bought one of these. The problem seems to be that it is cutting out when hot? This as happen when he's been driving along and caused a bit of a brown trouser moment, steering going etc. Could it be the MAF like on Scoobs?

I had a few Mk2's and knew of the Idle Stab Valve faults/disi cover etc but I am a bit lost on the 3's.

Any help?

If no fault codes, probably fuel/system relay fault

That sounds about right. There are no codes showing. Filters were a bit of an issue with MK2's as I remember, will also check the relays.

Many thanks

Put money on it being the fuel pump relay once you have located it open it up and you may find that one of the main solder joints on the circuit board has cracked or burnt away, resolder this joint and it should be ok.

My mums Mark III GTI has the same problem - one of the mechanics at a local garage reckoned there was a carbon build up somewhere as it had a happened on his old car - can;t remember any more detail as my Mium told me the story - and got a bit confused....

Interested to know what the problem with yours is though, as my Mum's car keeps cuttig out on roundabouts etc.

Thanks!

p.s. always run on cheap as possible supermarket fuel - and is an R reg with 45K on the clock - and had the fuel pump relay changed at last service a few months ago.

Just changed the filter. Next step is the relay.

Any further developments on this? Am going to bung some STP fuel system cleaner through the car for what it's worth as it's still playing up.

Turned out to be a dry joint. Seems this is a common problem.

Just found this thread, I am having a similar problem with my wife's MK111 and just cannot find the fault, what joints are you referring to?

On ours the rev counter just dies, ie engine stops and then starts itself again, when very hot it starts bunny hopping down the road and will sometimes not start when driven and then come back to car half an hour later, ie hot start. Rough idle as well.

It was put on VW diagnostic, the machine said temp sensor so replaced that, no change, put back on diagnostic which said lambda sensor, so replaced that and cleaned throttle body. Still no change, then took it to local garage who thought it might be 'coil pack'? Replaced that and the car seems to be running/idling better but it is still cutting out when warm. Perhaps there were two faults?
I am now tempted to take it to local auto electrician as i have no knowledge of electricals, any help appreciated!? Driving me insane!

My 205 started doing the same thing, and it turned out to be the junction of the main pos, off of the battery. (The point that splits off to the alternator etc).
It had corroded, and was making partial contact some of the time. Sometimes it was like Kangeroo petrol. Cleaning the connectors and tightning them down worked a treat.
Also try the main pos on the ign switch, and on the fuse/relay box.
(and the earths while you're at it!!)
