Soon to get a new car and have narrowed choice down to 3:

Astra Coupe 2.2 or turbo

Focus ST170

Alfa 147 2.0

Has anyone got any experience of these cars. Any sensible comments appreciated

Alfa, are you mad ?

The Focus, contrary to the rest of the range doesnt get a good write up, but in isolation is ok I beleive.

A mate had both the 2.2 SRI and GSI Turbo Astra's, 2.2 torquey and reasonably quick, the Turbo was fast and very tunable.

So, go for the GSI, good value as well.

FOCUS - bad gearbox and slow / handles and looks well
ALFA - bad everything, sounds nice / very pretty, bit left field
ASTRA - WTF nasty burberry thoughts / fast after it stops wheel spinning ? [coupe is a bit pretty though]

The Astra Turbos are great, as you may be aware I am serioulsy considering getting an Astra VXR and they are quick as ****, out of the three I think the Vaux has the looks too

I used to have a astra coupe turbo 51 reg, they are quicker than the 2.2 n/a version, the turbo kicks out 192 bhp.

From those 3 choices id pick the astra coupe.

I had the calibra turbo with the c20 let engine in.


260 bhp was easy to acheive with a fmic and a chip.

Good luck putting the power down though.

ST 170 - I love fast Fords but this is certainly not thier finest hour. Bordering on if it is even fast

Alfa looks nice enough but not driven that model so can't comment. We all know the reliability / dealer horror stories though!

Astra - the only decent Vauxhall is the new shape Astra, that's a good drive. Can't get on with the older gen at all, although as others have said it does look nice!

are you not open to any more suggestions? What sort of £ do you have in mind?

Not at the mo, just an interim car for a couple of years then looking for something really special.

Of that lot the Astra Turbo.

Or just get a 2.0 focus with all the kit on it. Not much slower than the ST170 anyway.

I test drove a Focus ST170 a while back and agree with the comments on here, pants! For what is supposed to be a sports cars it was painfully slow, Went for a Mondeo ST24 instead.
