Alfa GT deisel: any comments?

Back on thread after Troll`s splendid outburst..........
They look fantastic don`t they? Some good deals on them too by all accounts but I guess if it`s a company car then that wont really be an issue.
I read somewhere, can`t remember where, that the Brera is a lot better made than the GT, don`t really know why that should be.
I had an Alfa years ago, a GTV 2.0 Twinspark, lovely to drive, not so good to own. It had a few problems which the local Alfa dealer couldn`t sort out.
I`d love another Alfa, they are just a bit different and in a world full of Audis, BMWs etc etc that can only be a good thing.
I guess only a good test drive can tell you what you want to know, have you a good Alfa dealer nearby?

I've had one since May (had a 147 before), and it's very nice. Excellent performance with 150 bhp and more torque than the V6. It's also a stunning looking car; 17" wheels are a must, as are the rear parking sensors and Bose stereo: I have the standard stereo, it's rubbish! Leather interior is nice and good quality.
Alfa's had a bad rep on the older cars, and justified as the electrics were poor. Since the newer cars; 156, 147, GT, all the electrics are Boshe I think. so quite reliable. Bought mine from a private dealer, so put it through Perry's in Aylesbury for a multi-point check and their service was very good. It's a very reliable and mappable engine; Fiat produced I think, and supplied to Alfa and Saab among others.
On the negative side; it has got a heavy front end and the brakes are not that good (similar to the MY97-98 Impreza!). The rear tail gate tends to creak a bit in certain weather untill things warm-up. For alot more info, although quite biased!! visit; http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-gta-and-gt/
Another plus point; they are still a bit of a rare site on the roads so your not likely to lose it in a car-park!
Hope this helps a bit, best of luck.

I'll agree, although I've never driven one, that the BMW might be a better driving car. The others may have better economy or higher residual values, but my Alfa makes me happy because I know it's a little bit of 'heart-over-head' and I do feel a bit smug in traffic or parked along-side the euro-boxes.
Enjoying driving is hard enough these days, since I bought mine I've never thought; Oh I wish I'd bought.....
But don't listen to me, buy what makes you happy.

Thank god, some sensible mature commentry.
I had given up on this after the first few posts...
I am 54 now, daughter all grown up etc and after years of sensible 'dad' cars doing family duty I just want some fresh air.
The GT is IMHO better looking than the 'short ****' Brera.
I have a very big dealer in Worcester (sell Subaru too!) and in Alfa solid Red it looks absolutly fab!(17's )
My heart is sold, bugger the sensible thing, it looks just so great.
Sorry for that.
I hope my boss will see it my way.
The Sportwagon 157 looks sexy too, but getting all sensible again.
Thankyou for the real world comments, that has helped me.

Hello Graham,
Trust you're well. I'll be looking at a co. car in 6months or so and the GT is an option for me too. Rioja's comments seem pretty much on the money and reflect the reading that I've done. Personally I'm not that fussed about the dynamics as It'll spend most of it's life on the M4/5. As such the combination of quality styling and pleasant interior really appeal. I fancy the gunmetal grey
Cheers

Alfa is meant to be Style, out-of-the-ordinary,passion, and even realy sexy!
Old farts like me want a bit of that before it's too late!
I just simply fancy one.
The Jag has been the most reliable car I have ever owned!
It cruises well, economical and comfortable, even British Style (it is a Sport) but as I say, need some fresh air.
If my boss demands a 4 door car, then i could sneak in a Mazda Rx, maybe even a Prodrive one!
But the GT is very Sofia Loraine isn't it, still stunning after all the years!
Graham.
(sorry, been a cr@p day in industry)
