2nd economic car needed, advice on Astra 1.4 16v Mk4 or similar pleeeeeaaaaassssseeee
Hi guys,
Just bought my first place and it comes with a garage! I've had my 02 WRX for almost 4yrs from new and know I'm going to be too stretched to use it much. Problem is that it's my only car so even driving to a mates and back a few times every week is gonna skint me (but I really don't want to sell it!!!).
Been looking around abit and know there are a few cars which could act as "normal" transport whilst the Scoob hibernates during the week and comes out to play at weekends. Will have around £2k maximum to spend and want low insurance and tax if poss and it needs to last a good couple of years so no bangers.
Any suggestions?? I've seen a couple of Astra's, the 1.4 16v seems to get good write ups along with desiels, the Focus seems abit too pricey yet as there are only high mileage ones around.
Anyone have experiance with the Astray's?? Or anything else worth considering??
Cheers
Ross

There's always one!!
Don't want anything sporty or tarty, just want a normal car that people don't notice so I can park it anywhere I want without worrying about it like I do with the Scoob!

Not selling it, I can afford it, but would be nice to have some extra cash rather than spending on fuel and then worrying weather it's still going to be there when I come back to it!!!
Funny you mention Suzuki Andy, I saw a nice Jimny - bit of fun but rubbish on long journeys and 4x4 tax bracket (even though it's a 1.3!!!)
Anyone else with any experiance/advice???
Cheers

Just use the WRX.
If you spend up to £2,000 on a car then tax & insure it, plus other running costs, there is no way you'll save money over just having a WRX. Especially if you only plan on this car lasting a couple of years or so.
If you can get an old banger for about £100 with a full MOT it may be worth a go. Otherwise enjoy the car you've got.

I paid £1800 for a mint 1999 Astra 2.0 diesel estate as a normal car. It does 45 mpg on my 9.5 mile run to work. A very simple car, cheap parts (unless the fuel pump goes **** up and then you might as well buy another car). It drives well, is very cheap to run, and makes a great work horse.
BUT...by the time you've bought another car, taxed it, insured it, etc, it will take a loooooooooong time to pay back the difference on what you'd have spent out on fuel for the Scooby (unless you're doing mega miles every week). You could spend £2000 to save £500 a year. That's a four year payback time!!
